1. Well, that's strange, unless the drive has problems with both of those +R media brands. Some optical drives seem very sensitive to brands of media.
2. I presume this is occurring with the internal optical drive that came with the computer?
3. There's one other thing I can think of, and it's a real "long shot." If one reads
"Burning DVD±R and DVD±RW media with iLife '05 - compatible computers", which applied to Panther, it gave me the impression that, under Panther, those computers could burn ±R/RW media from iLife, but not necessarily from Finder or Disk Utility. I tried to get some clarification to that KB article, but no joy. That you are using iLife '05 made me think of this, but I suspect if it was a widespread problem with iLife '05 and Tiger, there'd be a lot of posts about this. Hence that KB article is probably a red herring for your situation.
4. However, your Mac clearly states it supports +R and +RW, which is what I presume the error message means by "this type of DVD..." but it could also have something to do with the media speed/brand or something else. The short list would be either:
4.1. Something the drive doesn't like about those media brands.
4.2. Something amiss with the optical drive.
4.3. Something amiss with your specific account (tried burning DVD+R from Finder using another account on your Mac?)
4.4.. Something amiss with your Mac OS X installation, which either of the following might correct:
- Running the procedure specified in my
"Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. Checks for and can resolve common troublemakers.
- Performing an Archive and Install. If you go that route, see my
"General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some tips.
5. I'm not sure what else to tell you with this. I always use -R/RW media, so I can't try this. If the computer is under warranty, you might want to contact AppleCare.
Good luck!
