Incorrect iPhone name shown on PC

Just wanted to say thanks a million for the beginners guide to editing the registry, worked perfectly ! I know it may be somewhat sad to want my phone to show up with my name on it but it was hacking me off bigtime as the name it kept showing up as was that of my ex which I do NOT want to see every time I connect my iPhone to the laptop 😀

Thanks for al lof the advice!! I am pc savvy and have done all of these steps, again, again, reboot, even tried the DELETING thing!! Now working.. It come back up when plugged in again with the incorrect name.. even renamed all three File, Name, and Data fields.. no luck.. was waiting for someone to have my same problem before posting but becoming impatient.. any advice? When I search for the incorrect name in regedit, only 1 destination is found.. it sounds like everyone else finds at least 2.. using win7.. thanks!

update *disabled autoplay completely..

update *regedit no longer show incorrect name anywhere!! In fact, i now can see the correct name in its place!! My computer > portable devices > WRONG NAME!!!! *subscript digital camera GRRRR!!!!

hey actually i have windows vista and i don't know how to open windows registry i searched it in the start menu as well but was not able to find it.

After following Tom's suggestion and doing a Registry search (press F3 key to search for the next entry), I renamed the incorrect iPhone entries, connected the iPhone again and it worked first time. Cheers Tom.

unknown2000, click start and on the right side click run, in the run box put regedit and hit enter. When the registry opens and before u make any changes click File then Export to make a backup of the registry then go ahead and search for the entries. If the Run is not listed, then u will need to add it by right clicking the start button, click properties, then customize the check the Run Command and click ok then go back to the start and u should see the Run now.

Boy was that easy! I know nothing of how to do these things....thanks sooo....much🙂

You were absolutely right. I had an issue with a client getting the wrong name in iTunes and in her Explorer "computer" window. The registry edits were all I needed to get it right for her.

Hi,

I have 2 iPhone 4, both are using one Apple universal docker to connect to PC, phone has its own name, and diaplay properly on PC wherever the device name is used, ie, under My Computer, Portable Devices. iPhone 4 are shown as A's iPhone or B's iPhone, as a Digital Camera.

I encountered this issue after installed iTunes 10.5 or upgraded to iOS 5, I am not sure which one caused the problem. The issue is, when I put B phone to docker or even connect to PC directly, the device name is always A's name. But after entering the device, the content (camera photo) is B's content. When using iTunes, phone's name diaplys correctly too. Only the device name on PC is wrong.

I connected B phone to another USB port which is never used by iPhone before, Win7 detected and tried to download/install and finally, B phone is shown as Apple Portable Device, no Phone Name, not as Digital Camera. Again in iTunes, both phones are shown correctly with their own name.

Not a big issue but a little bit confused, how to correct device name when B (or maybe C) connect to PC?

Connect wife's phone (phone B) to computer.

iTunes will load, giving the phone (phone A) ID.

On the menu bar near the top of the screen, on the far right, click on the "iPhone" tab.

Screen will load giving the "Summary" info.

Next to the iphone icon will be phone A ID.

Click on that ID, and it will highlight in blue.

Type in any name you wish, i.e. "Wife's Phone."

Now, the iTunes remembers that name with that phone.
