Iphone 4s stops playing music

I just replaced my 3Gs with an Iphone 4s 32 GB. Went for a walk today and used the ipod on it for the first time. I did what I always did with my 3Gs, selected a playlist and hit shuffle and let the music play. It played about 5 songs and then stopped. Thought I hit a button or something? Couldn't get it to start playing by hitting the pause/play button on the headphones. Pulled the phone out, and the screen looked like the song was still playing. There was the little play symbol up in the top right of the phone and the pause button was showing on the song. I hit the pause/play button on the ipod a few times and it still wouldn't play. Had to go back to the playlist, hit shuffle again, and then it started playing. In my 2 hour walk, this happened probably 8 or 10 times. Sometimes playing 3 or 4 songs, sometimes only one. It always stopped at the end of a song. The playlist has 90 songs in it. My 3gs NEVER did this and I used the ipod alot. Not sure if this is the Ios 5 software or the Iphone. I think it's the phone, cuz I did load ios 5 onto my 3gs and used it a few times before I got my 4gs and didn't have any problems. I did a search here and saw the problem as far back as 2007. I would think by now it wouldn't be an issue? Any solutions to this? Thanks in advance.

I have this problem too with an iPhone 4. It started with the install of OS 5. It will only play one song, then quit. The play symbol stays in the top, and when I go to "Now Playing" it displays the song that should be playing with the timer at 0:00. There's nothing I can do from this point other than reboot the phone. Once rebooted, I will be able to play one song again...

Anyone been able to fix this problem yet? I mean other than throwing the **** through a window??

I have the same problem with my iPhone 4, ever since I upgraded to OS 5. Some of my music plays fine, but random songs and albums will not play. I press the play button and nothing happens: the "circle" at the top of the screen does not move, and occasionally it will just skip to the next song. On I've deleted some songs/albums when synched and thent add them again and that seems to work, but it's a MAJOR hassle and the problem is very random. Has Apple fixed this yet????

So, I had a not so similar problem. I have a iPhone 3GS and had to switch to a Windows 7 machine from a XP. I installed iTunes, and imported my music from a external hard drive.

Later that day, I noticed songs stopping in the middle, but still playing, (no sound) or stopping completely, and going to the next song in the playlist. I found this to be the issue if I were to play the same songs on my iPhone or iTunes.

I finally found a troubleshooting article at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717 I tried the option of creating a new library, imported my stuff again. (yes I had a few spare hours) Since then, I have not had the problem. I have tested the 5 or 6 songs I identified as cutting off early, and they play fine now.

Will this work for you? I dunno. I also see this problem reported as far back as 2007, under different operating systems and devices. Alas, all of the suggestions were tried but to no avail. It is interesting to note that I have an old 1gb shuffle, and did not experience the issues with the songs as I did in iTunes and the iPhone.

Bought the 4S because I was having the problem in my 3; figured it was worn out. 4S is worse. I see lots of us complaining but where is Mr. Apple in all of this. Obviously there is a major problem. I am not the least interested in esoteric solutions that take a day and probably don't work. Add the bad battery life to this and I am ready to finally go over to the dark side and get me a Droid.

I also have this problem.

Hitting skip a number of times seems to force it to another song however like others say the album art is out of place with the track playing.

I would say it is only appears to be music that I bought in the past 12 months and by telling my Itunes not to syn those albums or tracks I don't seem to have a problem. Certainly not a solution as I bought that music to listen to not to look pretty in my library.

It also seems to be linked to the shuffle button, as I have also got around it by turning the shuffle off, skip to next track and turn shuffle back on again. Again not a main solution but doesn't take as long as powering down and up again.
