is the Hindi keyboard incomplete?

I just found the Hindi keyboard on iPhone but I noticed that a lot of the letters are missing. For example, the full version of the vowels (which is necessary if I want to start a sentence with one) and the aspirated characters like ch, bh, ph, kh, gh, th, etc ... I was really excited that Apple finally added this to the list of international keyboards but it's sort of pointless if I can't even type properly with it. Is there just something I'm missing here or is it an incomplete keyboard?? It's funny, I would think with all the Indian developers working at Apple that someone would have taken more care when creating this keyboard!

Anyone else who has used this please let me know your experience. Thanks!

It looks to me like the full vowels are on the shift characters as are the aspirated consonants. Is that not what you are seeing?

Also I only get an INSCRIPT layout (vowels/matras on the left, consonants on the right) regardless of which keyboard I choose in the preferences. Are you seeing that behavior as well?

This looks different. क्र is not what i expected. It looks not like ऋ without the half circle on the right.

did any one find the Hindi letter- ksha--- used in shiksha ? i think its missing.

It is there if you press the shift button (up arrow on left side). It's in bottom row.

I was trying to type the word ऋषि (sage/seer). How do I type the hri letter at the beginning of a word? Thanks.

If you press & hold down र key (long press) you will see both ऋ key there. While holding न you will see options for couple of other Anunasikas.

I am facing a challenge in getting the Hindi Keyboard create a specific word in Devanagari "Tadanarham" --> which is being rendered as "TadanarhEm" --> "तदनर्हम्". This is not Devanagari way of rendering this word. Invariably whatever way I try this is what I end up with Instead of र् + ह it is being rendered as र् + ह॓ which is incorrect.

Rest of the words works fine on similar operation like: अर्चन, मार्जन etc... In case of ह it is failing. Anyone faced this issue? Any known solution or workaround?

I couldn't raise a Bug since I don't have a Developer access. This is a Critical flaw in the Hindi Keyboard. Inconsistent treatment on operation. Anyone from Apple support team reading this post, can you please report this issue?

Try switching to the font Devanagari MT instead of Devanagari Sangam (or vice versa).

PS Sorry, I forgot this is the iPhone forum. On an iPhone you cannot switch fonts. I think this may be a bug in the Devanagari Sangam font which Apple has to fix.

That's a really strange bug.. never noticed it til now. Not sure why it's adding an 'e' to it. Maybe should contact Apple to let them know about this bug in the keyboard! It seems to be iPhone only though as the Devanagari keyboard on Mac displays it correctly.

Nothing to do with the keyboard, it's the font. Switch to Devanagari Sangam on your Mac to see the bug.

I'm using the pre-installed Devanagari keyboards.. I thought that's what you were referring to. I don't seem to have that font installed. When I use the keyboards it works properly tho.

So you are still on OS X 10.6? iOS uses the font Devanagari Sangam, and this is also provided with 10.7 and 10.8. Here is the difference:

Keyboards are not relevant to this issue.

Ooh interesting.. yes, my work computer is on 10.6 still. I'll have to see how it is on my laptop since I have Lion on that. Either way though, Apple definitely needs to know about this issue. Hopefully if enough people bring it up they'll fix it soon.

Thanks Tom. That helped. I didn't realize this is a Font issue and not a Keyboard issue. Yes, I was trying this out on OSX not in iOS. As you rightly pointed out, this is still an issue in iOS as we can not switch fonts. Devanagari Sangam font needs to be fixed.
