I had the same problem today, once I put the phone on airplane mode then turned it off it showed service again. If this continues I will take it back to the store.

Today my friend ask me to fix his iPhone 4s which showing no service message, I've tried many things but nothing worked so I inserted his sim card in mine iPhone 4 and mine sim card in his phone. Still no result, when I swap them back my phone was having same problem not only that I needed phone very badly so I inserted my sim card from iPhone 4 to my old iPhone 3GS ( i used an extension) and guess what it's not working anymore. Is there any chance that some kind of virus is spreading using network and sim cards?

Had the same problem with a Iphone 4s bought in May 2012, in UK. Most of the time says no service. I think the problem is the same as the problem with the 4. If I lay the phone down for a while the signal eventually appears, but when I pick up the phone and hold it within a few inches of where it was, withinh 30 to 40 secs. no service. I spent over 30 mins the other day talking to a gut in Coneticut, just went through all the usual so called fixes, nothing works. Anoyingly Apple will not admit there is a problem, but this has been around a long time know and nothong is been done about it. Come on Apple. WAKE UP TO YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES. You are going to loose a lot of credibility with this.

Using a non-conducting case seems to dramatically reduce the occurence of the "no service" problem. I've been using a case for the past 2 weeks, and finally, after 7 months, I have phone that works OK (albeit probably not as well as most Android phones).

For me, all the other "fixes" (turning off 3G, software upgrades, settings resets, SIM swap, new 64K microSIM, phone swap) provided only temporary relief (at best) from the problem.

Perhaps all these other issues contribute (or contributed) to the problem, but it certainly seems to me that Apple would save a ton of money and goodwill by simply including a case or bumper with each iPhone 4s. And gving free cases/bumpers to every iPhone 4s user who complains of "no service".

Just a suggestion...

Apple will never admit there is a problem. Even with iP4, they deflected the problem by stating all phones have antenna degradation if held "wrong."

As far as your "Wake up to your responsibilities" statement, this won't happen either because all these people that have this problem still have their iPhones and are going to get the next iPhone as well. The "No Service" issue has been happening since iOS 3 for some people. I don't see it going away anytime soon. There is an explanation for this, and Apple has it, but the phones keep on selling so why admit anything is wrong. From my experiences with the "No Service" message and looking into it a bit, it seems as if it has something to do with staying ahead of jailbreakers. Apple changes the baseband to brick jailbroken phones, then the carriers have to update their network for the new baseband. The fact is though I have no idea what is going on. All I knew was my iPhone 4S wasn't working, where non-iPhones had no issues at all. I gave up on Apple and got another phone and haven't had a single issue since. I had a choice though, and I choose not to live with the "No Service" problem. All these other people have a choice as well, live with it or get another phone.

I have a completely different issue. I occassionaly get "No Service", but reseting the phone solves that problem. Although, why should I have to reset my darn phone just to use it?

My photo app crashes, and will not allow any photos taken by the camera access to memory. When opening the app, it comes up for 1/2 a second, then goes back to the regular screen. Just got my 4s 5 weeks ago. Perhaps there solution to the no service just screwed line code somewhere else.

The battery life is amazing. Way better than the Bionic Android it replaced, but only in battery life.

My retailer did a hard reset on the phone today, then once I loaded my iTunes playlist back on the phone, no more photos.

I think I will take this phone back, and get another Android. It's a shame...I really wanted this phone to live up to the hype. But in the end, I guess it was all just hype!

I've just claimed my iPhone warranty regarding intermittent no service issue (especially when no 3G signal around), the iPhone heat up issue, battery drain (which is caused by no service and heat up issue). I've tried all iOS (5.0.1b, 5.1, 5.1.1), reset everything (network, all content), DFU recovery, or any other suggested steps written in the web -- which seems to fix the problem, but at the end of the day, the problem goes back.

Now, I got an iPhone replacement -- it takes more than 2 weeks to get it, and for the last 1 day, the iPhone looks very promising.

Current status: 5h 55m, standby 1d 1h and I'm on 44%. On average, it's like ~2.2% drops per hour. I consider myself a light user while testing it.

It's iOS 5.1.1, build on May 2012 when I run serial number check. No 128K USIM available in my country.

The settings I used which some of them I found on the web:

Location Services only turned on Compass Calibration.

Notification enabled for services that I need (no weather, no stock)

Turned off "Send Diagnostics & Usage".

Turned off Bluetooth

Turned off automatic date & time adjustment.

Turned on PING restriction.

Turn off iCloud for everything (only turned on the contact when I need to update contacts), no mail setup yet (I'm using Sparrow).

Vibrate only on silent. Brightness ~40%.

Wifi ON, 3G ON all the time

Everybody i have found a solution that worked for me the first time. All you have to do is go to general settings~ reset~ Erase all content. Be warned that by doing this it will delete all your contacts and everything so back up first. After you do that set your phone back up, redo the network reset and then make sure you are connected to the internet. It will say Iphone is activating, will take a few minutes. And then it will say Iphone has be Activated. From there all you have to do is then add your stuff back on it and you are good to go.
