Hello, all, looking for some insight. Just got in my Sony Ericsson z520a, replacing my old Siemens S56. I'm very happy with the Bluetooth performance of the z520a, including its compatibility with Salling Clicker, but I've noticed that the one function that I haven't been able to do with this new phone that never gave me a problem with the S56 is dialing from my Mac.
I've tried using Address Book and I've tried using BuddyPop, and neither seems to work. In fact, the functionality within Address Book seems to be parallel with the main bluetooth connection (i.e. if I'm paired, then the Address Book bluetooth toggle doesn't want to turn on).
iMac G5,
Mac OS X (10.4.4),
iPod with video (white 30GB)
I have the same issue, except that I have gone from a Sony Ericsson T637 (to a Z520a), which worked quite well with the address book, Cingular being my carrier. I cannot dial much less send or receive SMS messages, nor do I get the screen pops when anything, call or SMS comes in.
That was funny, I was just on a different board here on Apple Support and just happened to check My Questions and you had just happened to post on this thread today.
Followup on Sony Ericsson z520a. I have contacted SE support on the issue and they were very obtuse, suggesting that this was not a function the phone supported. I haven't pushed very hard yet, but that seems ludicrous to me. Isn't that a pretty basic function of a bluetooth phone?
Anyway, I DID succeed at remote dialing via BuddyPop, though not with Address Book. So evidently the phone DOES support the feature. Ahem. But I don't know why Address Book isn't dialing. Unfortunately, while BuddyPop supports sending an SMS, it doesn't offer at-the-moment options: I can set it to dial the phone number on a click or I can set it to send an SMS on a click, but I can't set it to give me a choice.
Hmm. I suppose the question is whether Apple will make any attempt to fix the code, what with the shift to Intel. When you link the device, the option is there (not greyed-out), and it's such a seemingly simple service. On top of that, it is clearly listed as a compatible device. As an aside, the remote-control via the phone is pretty cool.
I guess it's on Apple's code and not the phone's...if BuddyPop is able to do it, the code must work in the phone. But I've been able to use Address Book with my previous phone.
I'll post, as well, if new info comes to light here.
Dialing from Address Book on my PowerBook G4 works for me. I just have to remember to click the Bluetooth button on upper left part of the Address Book window to enable Bluetooth functions.
No dice for me. I have tried a hack I saw at: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040210190627468 and it has not worked for me. I have no functionality via the address book and iSync is somewhat spotty. I have also tried deleting the lonk and re-establishing via the phone, rather than the bluetooth setup application.
Nope, and I have checked a couple of message boards (take a look at the link in my last posting) and this appears to be specific to the Z520. I have used various Sony Ericssons and Siemens phones (all with their own issues to sort out) but none that have not worked with the address book before. The hack in that link has not worked for me and I tried other suggestions of pairing from the phone to the computer, rather than the other way around with the same result. I have not yet poked around the Sony Ericsson site to see if there are any firmware updates or configurators. . .
Tell me about it! There's always a little struggle with every new phone. I try not to tell the carrier I am working with a Mac, but that's usually getting all of the IP config info for web access, so this one's new at least!
I guess I was lucky that everything worked for me from Day One with the Z520a without resorting to hacks.
I also like the BluePhoneMenu app which allows me to send SMS messages through the Z520 from my Powerbook. It also pops up an alert when I receive a call and displays the caller based on the Address Book database. It even displays the battery charge level.
I just got my 520a, and had the same problem - the Address book does nothing. But I also just tried BluePhone Elite.... what a great app, it even tells me my signal strenght in the Dock. I think I'll register!

(and no I'm not related to BluePhone Elite in anyway)
and then save and close the file. If Adress Book is running, quit it. Start Address Book and click the Bluetooth icon if it isn't already blue, you may need to accept the incoming connection on your cell phone. This should work for all the new Sony Ericsson phones, K750 W550 W600 W800 W810 W900 Z520
Unfortunately, this I've already tried. I have never had a problem getting the address book getting the BlueTooth link, it just does not do anything, and as I mentioned, I have had various and sundry phones over the years with no address book issues whatsoever.
