Photos are split between multiple DCIM folders in Windows

Hi all,

I'm a little confused as to why this has happened, but since resorting my phone for an iOS 5 upgrade, what used to be just a single folder of photos and videos, has split into 4 and it's made it an absolute nightmare to find anything. For example:

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\823WGTMA

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\858HDJES

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\860OKMZO

Computer\iPhone\Internal Storage\DCIM\965YOKDJ

Is there anyway to easily merge these back into just a single folder? And how would I know which of them the iPhone will save to?

I cannot cut and paste between the folders.

Thanks

This is very interesting, and would you be willing to please call iCare and let them know? Anything to get this fixed, and if you suspect this may possibly be related to using Location Services, the engineers should know. It might speed up a resolution for all of us. I do not believe anyone in Apple Customer Service monitors these forums, which I find strange, so if you could call up customer service and let them know, maybe this will help to get a fix out sooner.

I just did this and will see if it helps. However, I don't remember ever changing my camera settings to allow location. I have allowed other apps to use location but I'm pretty choosy about it. Plus, I never had this problem until very recently. I believe it was an update I did-against my better judgement. Because I share my pictures frequently on a website, I have been uploading pictures on a regular basis. It was just this past week that the problem occurred. I did notice that the pictures were being categorized by place for the past month or so, but they weren't in weird folders like now.

I'll let you all know if this works.......

So, I decided to do a live chat to report this problem because I am working from home and I can't be on the phone like that. So I get level one and we talk a little about it and he says, well, I am going to transfer you to a supervisor to see if they can get to the root of the problem. I'm like, ok, thanks. Then the chat goes dead and no supervisor, no nothing. Jeesh. However, I do have a ticket number and will be CALLING now to tell them I want to talk to a supervisor.

I don't think I would care as much if it was some app that I could work around (that would be annoying but I could face it), but I use my pictures a lot and it worked fine until Apple felt the need to change it around-- I'm usually pretty savvy and I'm pretty sure I didn't change my settings. There are obviously people who are bothered by this because not only is it on this forum, but it's mentioned frequently on other forums.

I'll keep you posted.

I got exactly the same issue after I restored my iPhone 5 from a previous iPhone 4 backup.

When I connect the iPhone 5 to my laptop I got a lot of folder all with the same date so is impossible to find any pictures without browsing manually all folders. I don't understand what Apple changed !!!

Note: Latest IOS upgrade did not fix the issue. Apple any plan to fix this problem?

The issue is not copying photos to your computer.

There are different work around for that. It should be straight forward, but it is easily bypassed.

The issue is what do you do with the pictures once they have been copied ?

On any digital camera, you copy your files to the computer, and then to make room for the next batch, you can delete pictures in the DCIM folder, delete them all, or format the memory card.

On the iphone, now, you can delete pictures one by one in your photo app. But what if I want to delete everything ?

What happens to the camera database, now that there are 43 different folders ? How do I pick and choose the ones to keep and the ones to delete ? Which one is the photo stream ?

Besides, the fact that these folders change name every now and then make even the use of a third party tool impossible to bypass apple shortcomings.

Syncing files between the phone and the computer is impossible, because they are in foders that change name all the time !

I use my iphone the same way I use any other camera. I import all pictures into Lightroom, and manage them from there.

I then export my "keepers" into a folder that iTunes is syncing to my iphone, so these are available on the phone.

But now, I can't delete the photos once imported to make room for the next batch, save by deleteing them manually one by one...

Hi All

My first post here. I've been having exactly the same dramas as others here for a few months and pulling my hair out while using the * and the jpg in search to view the photos etc but as we know you cannot batch copy or drag this way you can only copy one at a time...cmon its not 1983!!

I'm hearin ya y'all....

BUT....

I've just 5 mins ago discovered an app for my windows PC that allows me to bypass all the horrible DCIM folders and directly view all my photos located on my iphone 4S. All photos in all those horrible folders all viewed at once on my PC, just like before....AND.....and this is the money shot.....drum roll.....you can batch click & copy or drag the photos you choose to the windows folder of your choice.

Yay....Easy peasy.

hope this helps others whom have been frustrated as well 🙂
