How do you watch movies on a plane
I was wondering what app to use to download a movie to be watched later on a plane when there's no wifi. And are there any free children's movies out there to download.

You can download movies from iTunes and then watch them later. Only iTunes content can be downloaded to the iPad so that is really your only choice.
Other apps will let you stream movies, but as you know, you can't do that on an airplane, so the movies will have to be downloaded from iTunes.
Actually, you can put non iTunes content on the iPad. Any legally owned non-copyprotected digital video files can be put onto the iPad through the 'movie' tab in iTunes. For example if you have any DVD's with a digital copy you can see if they can be transferred (you're subject to each one's DRM)
