MacBook Pro is going into sleep mode randomly

Hi there

I hope someone knows a fix to this problem. About two weeks ago my MacBook Pro started randomly going to sleep - even as I'm typing. It happens almost hourly.

I tried setting the energy saver to never on screensaver and discs, but it has not stopped the problem.

It started happening around the time I downloaded version 10.7.2, and updated iTunes to 10.5

I've had the MacBook for about a year and haven't noticed anything like this before.

If anyone else has experienced it or knows a fix, that would be much appreciated.

Cheers

John

Thanks, I'll try that next. In the meantime (see poster Capt Walt above), I'm going to try the SMC reset as the symptoms given closely match some of the things I've noticed recently. I guess I'll know if it has fixed the problen later tomorrow. If not, I'll reinstall as you suggested. Thanks for the suggestion.

No, but after resetting the SMC as advised by tjk, it didn't happen for a day. Then it came back a few times the next day. Then I took my laptop home for the weekend and connected to my home network, and noticed some settings were different, like the auto back switch on the time machine dashboard had been switched off - not by me. Now no noticeable incidence of it this week so far.

Weird, very weird. I'm pretty sure if I still had Apple Care remaining a Mac Guru would say switch that and refresh that, and it would be gone.

But fingers crossed, it doesn't come back now.

I've the same very frustrating problem. I'm using Lion OS and my MacBook Pro randomly goes to sleep. When I restart it, it gets to the log in screen fine but then the screen goes blank. The hard drive seems to have gone to sleep b.c. my computer can't charge my iPod when it's in this state. If I move the computer from my table and onto my lap, it sometimes comes back to life. (BTW I'm definitely not a technical type.)

My MacBook Pro is still under warranty as I bought it on Jan. 11, 2010, and have subsequently extended its warranty. I took it into the Beijing Sanlitun Apple Store early Dec. and they replaced the logic board & hard drive but on receiving it back at the store early Jan. the computer was still having the same problems and I showed it to the staff. They took it back, acknowledging that it still had issues, and tried to repair it again. They replaced the SDRAM, logic board, hard drive, bracket front hard drive with IR / Sleep / HD Cable. Just a week after getting it back for the second time the same problem is happening again! It's driving me insane. Any suggestions? I've lost faith with the Beijing Sanlitun Apple Store.

In Terminal run:

pmset -g pslog

Then next time it happens if you could go into system profiler (A shortcut: Hold Option & click the  - top left)

Then under the Software tab - Logs - You will find the log of when the system goes to sleep. That should give us more of an idea of what is going on hopefully.

Also if you could run in terminal:

pmset -g

And post results.

Thank you.

Hi AussieDJ

What am I on the look out for? Do you think it's a battery problem? The problem hasn't happen again yet, but what should I expect to find when I go into system information (hold option & click the  - top left) and search under the software tab?

Also when I go into the terminal and run either "pmset -g pslog" or "pmset -g" I get this kind of info:

To further my last post, I've just talked with a senior techie from Apple support and he thought it was a hard drive issue, esp. b.c. moving the computer can jolt it awake. He said that I shld take the computer back to the Apple Store and if they can't fix it this time that Apple shld replace my machine. This is turning out to me a massive ordeal.

I've sort of felt that it could be the harddrive. This has been happening to me since I got the laptop. When I go to move the laptop, it will just go to sleep. It will do it continuously and then randomly when I go to move it. I have apple care and I'm thinking of calling them b/c I can't deal with it anymore. Also, when I pull out the headphones sometimes there will be no sound, and there will be a red light coming out of the headphone port. I have to put the headphones back in and then out a few times b4 the sound starts working through the speakers.

The Apple Store in Beijing just replaced my MacBook Pro after two attemps at fixing it. Apparently I could have demanded a new one after they failed to fix it the first time. It mustn't have been a hard drive problem though b.c. they replaced that, twice in fact! Definitely call the guys at Apple Care. The problem my computer had seems similar to the one you've been experiencing. For me, it was hugely frustrating not being able to have confidence in my computer as I felt at any stage it could have had a catastrophic crash.
