Iphone 4s Takes Pictures Upside-Down???

My iphone 4s takes pictures upside down even if I hold the phone upright (home screen on the bottom). Is it just a glitch in the phone or can I do something to fix it??

Has anyone else had this issue??

iPhone 4, iOS 5

I'm pretty sure that is just one of trillions of glitches, as my own **** experience With faulty Apple equipment continues... if you try to get hep you'll be left very dissatisfied and frustrated and maybe 1-2 hours on hold at the help desk.

Ohhhh, maybe that's why they have these forums, so those that are denied support have a hope to get help here. I'm thinking you're never going to get anything but a headache. :( Apple doesn't care, why do they call it 'Apple Care?'

Hurrah, just got back from holiday, got all pictures off my iPhone 4 to my Windows PC, stream the lot to my TV hurrah - upside down... This is the first time I started using the volume button - it feels more natural - kudos for that feature, but the upside down thing is just rubbish.

Now having fun rotating pictures in the windows photo gallery... idiot is the first term that comes to mind.

To the last few posters who just found out about upside down pictures, if you haven't read this whole thread, and if you weren't already aware, this forum is just for apple users to help each other. Apple DO NOT come here and get involved with these issues. So if you really want this issue fixed (like me and some others), you can do the following:

This morning I emailed my vacation photos to the friends we vacationed with. I got an email back telling me all the photos were upside-down "haha very funny--now send them right-side-up please."

I was sure I did something wrong until I found this thread. I am pretty upset to find out this is just how the 4s works and used your link to submit feedback. It's just beyond me that this problem has not been fixed yet and because of that I worry that Apple has no intention of doing so.

For so long I thought it was my phone having problems until I've read this thread, and it really **** me off. How could such a huge company make such a careless mistake, and be so irresponsable. I see people talking about the EXIF information, so ok now i understand what it does.

But apple proposed, suggested that we should hold the phone with the volume buttons facing upward, have it function as a shutter button. So I believe this is the default orientation. Just like the way I hold my digital camera. And I would not expect it to be so stupid to take every photos upside down and add a note 'hey computer you should turn this photo 180 degree everytime you read it, if you understand what i mean."

I think apple is too busy figuring what features to be left out for older iphones that they just stop fixing bugs.

I guess / hope that it would help if we all would take the time to leave a report to Apple to solve this problem.

I just used the form that mfarqwa also posted http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html to let them know the following:

"First of all, love the iPhone!

But this little problem is getting more and more irritating! When a picture is taken with the iPhone in landscape modus and the volume button on top to use the right hand to make the picture it turns up upside down when I email the photo's or use them in forms to upload the pictures to websites.. This is becoming very annoying!

The problem is, I guess, that before the volume button could be used users turned the device with the volume button downwards in landscape mode so they can use the right hand to touch the capture button in the software.

The "problem" that comes with this is that there are left en right handed people. I don;t know how left handed people are using the iPhone to take pictures (volume up of down / volums on the right upside or down leftside ). But this problem could be fixed with a setting which will influence the picture that is taken. Switch on, landscape and volume button up than it is a normale picture. Switch off and the "normal" landscape picture can be made with the volume button on the down side.

I and many others would love to see some kind of feature i described because every single time I need to send pictures on the mail of by uploading to show the pictures on a website I manually have to change the view..."

I think that it would help. If you don't try then nothing ever happens 🙂

For those following this thread and wondering if yesterday's new ios 6.0 update fixed the upside-down picture problem I can tell you it DID NOT. At this point I find the whole thing comical. Apparently the rest of the entire mobile industry is smart enough to figure out how to make their phones take a right side up picture but Apple can't. Sorry but that's total BS. The only conclusion you can draw at this point is they've done this intentionally to force people in to buying a MAC and they're not going to do a **** thing about it. Very sad 😟

I was also frustrated by this issue. So I developed an app that lets you email photos so they will have the correct orientation when the person receives them in their email. Search for Rotate Mailer in the app store.

The problem started with iOS 4. Apple stopped saving images with the correct rotation (instead they just save the metadata with rotation instructions). Unfortunately, none of the web mail sites honor these instructions.

Why would we pay you $1.99 for your App when the "SnapBot" App does the very same thing for FREE ? That said the ultimate solution in my mind is still for Apple to fix the problem versus having to download any app that's basically nothing more than a band-aid fix all be it probably the only fix we'll ever have given Apple has chosen to totally ignore the existance of the issue.

Guess what - all the rotating you try and do will not matter one bit. The pictures will still have metadata indicating their upside down orientation and many apps are going to honor that, not your wishes.

My wife just spent some time getting her facebook timeline photo just right, but she had taken the original photo 'upside down'. We rotated upright in Office 2010, cropped, uploaded, and it was upside down on Facebook. I warned her, but she said not worry because Facebook has a rotate tool. She used the Facebook rotate tool, and her photo was correct! Alas, it only lasted 5 minutes before facebook re-rotated it, and now no matter what she cannot display it in the correct orientation.

I have found site after site where your 'rotation' settings will not mean jack squat - these upside down iPhone images are upside down forever.

Arrogant b&^stards - that's all you'll find in Cupertino.

I have spent the last 2 hours trying to fix the problem. the huge problem I faced is that I have a sony Vaio and when I tried to rotate the photo in windows photo gallery, it crashed my computer! an error box started flashing over and over again and I had to shut down the computer, so had to try other ways. I downloaded losless rotator and that has worked great, although it means double handling all the files!! I also had to rotate all my video files. this was time consuming. I had to open them with windows live movie maker, rotate them, then save them which all takes time.

ok! now while I was fixing all my files and typing the above my iphone just got the ios 6.0 and not only are the photos the right way up on the computer but I can rotate them in windows photo gallery!! YAY YAY YAY. The videos still need to be volume buttons down, but the photos are great and editable!!

THANK YOU APPLE!

If your problem was fixed it's hard to believe it was due to iOS 6. Right after downloading iOS 6 the first thing I did was test the upside down pic problem and no change at all. If anyone else thought iOS 6 fixed the problem I'd love to hear from them. Until then I won't be thanking Apple for anything given how they've totally ignored the problem for how many months now?

I have had a really good play and for me it is all fixed. I can take photos any which way and it comes out the right way on my computer. it has been very frustrating, but I am really happy that for me it is fixed. I purposely bought the iphone to have the camera and video option with me always. my only downside with the camera that the quality of inside photos is poor.

I've spent the last couple of days chasing this problem. A friend of mine has a website that she just re-built and the picture she used on her homepage was showing upside down when I viewed the site on my iPhone/iPad. Everywhere else it showed up fine (IE, Firefox, Chrome on MacOS and Windows 7). I only stumbled upon the problem when I compared good pics with the upside down one and the EXIF data revealed iPhone as the culprit!

So, now the question, how do I tell her how to fix her pics? I was able to open the pic using Irfanview, then saving with auto-rotate correction. Has anybody found a better solution? Maybe a different photo app on the iPhone? IOS6? Maybe?
