iTunes 10.5 cutting off music?

I've recently purchased a new Macbook Air and I love it except for a minor issue.

I have migrated from a PC to Mac and everything has gone smoothly so far when setting up iTunes. I had my music library on an external hard drive that was originally hoooked up to my desktop PC. However, this hard drive is not very practical when it comes to portability. So, I purchased a new WD My Passport for Mac. I hooked them both up and transferred all my media from the old drive to the new one. I then imported all the media into my iTunes and chose the new external drive as my download location for new purchases.

However, I have noticed that a couple songs (I haven't listened to all 1100+ songs yet) are cut off. And not just a couple seconds at the end of the song. It's anywhere from 50s - 1 min at the end of the song that is cut off. The song continues to play, but with "dead air". This happens when playing the song from iTunes or my iPod/iPhone.

Today I deleted the songs from the new external hard drive, then hooked up the old one and re-copied them to their directories. I still have the same issue. The interesting thing is that if I play the songs in QuickTime I have no problems. They play through entirely without cutting off. No "dead air".

I'm at a loss as to what this issue could be. I am running iTunes 10.5 (the latest one) and iOS 5 for both my iPod Touch and iPhone. Mac OS X (10.7.2), 13 inch i5 Macbook Air. Any help is appreciated in advance. Thank you for your time and efforts.

I'm having the same problem. I recently bought a new computer and saved everything to my portable hard drive. I am now running windows 7. I downloaded and installed the new iTunes this morning (10.5.3.3) and started noticing this on a couple of songs.

I also assumed it was corrupted content, but I don't see how it would affect so many songs. And I don't see Apple addressing this bug in iTunes. Does anyone have an update???

I am having the same problem. It started around 10:30 pm CST. It all started when Bluetooth first disconnected my mouse and my keyboard without warning. Now, after restart, my iTunes keeps cutting off the music. It tends to happen at a consistent different times with different songs, 7 sec with Good Girls Don't by the Knack, and 9 sec with The Game of Love by Santana. Very Annoying. No obvious fix with reboot. OS Lion, ITunes 10.5.3.

Any ideas out there on a fix?

I'm having this exact same problem too. Not on my PowerBook because I use my new iPod with a different computer. I'm having this trouble on my Dell. It happened a couple months ago when I upgraded from Win XP to Win 7. I dropped my music folder into iTunes as I've always done (had to wipe my iPod and start over to sync) and now songs are cutting off. I have no idea how much music is affected; I have easily 40gb of music and my 16gb nano is chock full. Of the albums i've noticed this happening on, about 1/2 to 3/4 is affected.

Songs randomly stop; there's no pattern with when they'll stop. Some cut off just a few seconds, some cut off whole minutes and there's a whole lot in between. I've checked the files for corruption and there are no problems with the files themselves. The files play fine in QuickTime and Windows Media Player. I even copied some songs onto my PowerBook and they play fine on an older (ancient) version of iTunes. This definitely suggests it's iTunes that has something going on.

I've re-downloaded songs as I find them, but it's a pain in the *** and slow going. The other problem is I purchased a lot of music from iTunes that's no longer available. For example, a lot of my Social Distortion and two Placebo albums aren't on iTunes anymore, so I can't re-download those files. I tried deleting them and putting them back in the library from backups, but I still get the cutoff issue.

If this was just iTunes on the computer, it wouldn't bother me so much. Unfortunately, the problem has transferred to my iPod. Had I known about this, I definitely wouldn't have synced my iPod. Please fix this, Apple!

I think I may have a solution, thanks to someone from Apple Care.

If you have a few purchased songs that are giving you hassle, just delete them and go back to the iTunes Store to download your Purchased music. Be aware that you will lose your play counts and those songs will be removed from playlists.

BUT!

You can also quit out of iTunes, then hold down Option as you re-open it. In the popup window, choose to Create Library and save yourself a new empty library with a new, unique name. Then go to File > Library > Import Playlist and choose your old library's XML file. It will take a while for your old files to import (my 23,000 songs took me about 3.5 hours to import), but I was able to do this and my songs are playing back fine now, and my play counts, ratings, and playlists are intact! I'm not sure why it worked, but it did.

You can always create a new library and import just one of your problem songs to see if it plays before processing the entire batch.

Out of curiosity, does anyone else with problems use Doug's AppleScripts?

I don't know about the most recent iTunes but typically with other versions the XML file did not 100% duplicate the contents of the actual version iTunes uses (Library.itl). I think the differences lay in some of the more obscure metadata such as last played or somethng -- I'll leave it to you to check. I'm just observing that this may not be the solution.

joyofsoy: thanks for posting the solution that worked for you... however...

I can't re-download the music without paying for it again, and I refuse to do that.

I have gone through my entire library over the past few months and I have just a handful of songs that are affected. These songs are not on the cloud - they were purchased before the cloud service existed. They played fine until I updated to iTunes 10.5.

There should be a way to restore them to their original state without having to repurchase them.
