Calendar colors keep changing

I haven't seen a question about this posted since iOS 5 came out (and most seem to come from the last decade).

I'm running iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2. I use both iCloud calendars and I subscribe to a number of Google calendars, as well. This problem only manifests itself with the subscribed calendars. I'm glad that you can finally customize the color of a subscribed calendar, but your choices don't stick. I want my work calendar to be red, my travel calendar to be blue, my personal calendar to be green, and a fourth orange. I have set these by clicking on the Calendars tab at the top to show the list of calendars, then tapping Edit, and then setting the colors.

I don't know when it does this, but it will always change the colors to something else. And it's not consistent between the iPhone and iPad. So, for example, the work calendar, which I had set as red, is now purple on my iPad. It's green on my iPhone. I realize the color might not sync between devices, but if I set it as red on both, why is it changing them to something else?

Only thing I can tell is perhaps it happened when the iPad's screen shut off, or maybe when it synced.

Is this a known issue? Is there a workaround?

Seriously what's going on here? This just started happening to me this morning. 3 out of 7 of my calendars changed colors on me (some even changing to a color I was using on a different calendar, causing identical colored calendars!). I was able to change 2 of the 3 but not back to their original colors, my only option was to swap the original colors between the 2 oddly enough.

As of iOS7 this is now happening to me. My iCloud calendar colors look fine. Ditto for the colors in iCal on my MBP. But the colors in BusyCal are getting changed up on some of the most 'common' calendars. They are all going dark grey and no matter what I do, they go back to that color. The colors on my iPhone appear to be fine as well.

So, for me this is limited to how BusyCal is syncing those calendars. But it seems something definitely changed in iOS7 or something changed to iCloud right around the same time.

Since I primarily use BusyCal, I hate that multiple calendars are now the same color. I don't actually care what color they are, but I would like them to each be different AND to match between devices.

I spoke to the head supervisor to finally get a fix. I bought a new Macbook laptop and it decided that one of my calendar colors should be light turquoise, when it's always been red. It was pushing the turquoise to all my other devices, and no matter how many times I changed it back to red, and through away the iCal preference file, it would switch back to turquoise.

iCal changed to "Calendar" in Mountain Lion, and this could be part of the cause - in case any of you have the same situation. I have Lion 10.7.5 on my desktop and Mountain Lion 10.8.5 on my new Macbook.

The fix (for me): Go to your list of calendars. Highlight the one that's giving you problems. Go to File at the top, go to Export, and Export that single calendar (Work, Family, Kids - whichever is refusing to be the color you want it to be) to your desktop. Then DELETE the problem calendar. (don't freak out - the content is saved on your desktop). Now restart your computer. Now go to the + sign and Add the calendar back into your list, and assign it the color you want it to have. Now DRAG the single calendar file from your desktop, to the newly created calendar. All of your events should copy back into your new calendar, and remain the color that you want it to be. When you are done (and this has worked), drag that file on your desktop to the trash.

If you have more than one calendar that is changing colors on you without asking, you will probably have to repeat the steps with each rogue calendar.

Just another datapoint. My wife is running 10.8.5 on her Mac and iOS7 on her iPad and the same issue has started for her today. She uses many different calendars (and colors) to keep track of work and personal items. Not all colors are changing but at least one does. It is particularly irksome because she had previously set her work calendar to green and one of her home calendars to purple and now both appear as purple. She has tried changing them on each device and by signing into iCloud. They then change back immediately. We will try carole's fix but it is more than a bit nerve racking to delete a calendar with much important data. This is clearly not optimal.

carole's fix seems to have worked for me.

I am running 10.8.5 on my MBP and iOS7 on my iPhone 5.

After I copied the exported calendars back into the Calendars app, it took a LONG time to update. In fact, as of me writing this, it is still not finished. But I know that it is doing something because when I refresh the calendar app on my iPhone, events are slowly appearing where they should be.

Hopefully, this finishes updating soon.

And yes, so far the calendars are the colors I want them to be.

So, thanks carole!!!
