Virgin Super Hub in Modem Mode w/Airport Extreme

The airport extreme is set up as my router with the VM super hub in modem mode. I then access the internet wirlessly through the various devices.

Here's the thing, evrything works fine, the apple tv, the airport express internet access on my imac and laptop.....BUT

I cannot get at any time internet speed of over 20mb. I have tested the speed of the internet by plugging direct into the VMSH and i get the 50mb speed that i pay for so I have ticked that box.

What could be the problem with my set-up? Why and where am I loosing 30mb of internet speed?

Please help its getting really frustrating!!

If you turn off the wireless on a Mac and then connect your Mac to one of the Ethernet LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme, what speed do see?

That is truly outstanding. You always lose a few percentag points of speed with the introduction of the router since this involves a firewall and sharing of the Internet connection.

So the focus shifts to the wireless network.

As you know, the speed of your wireless connection will always depend on a number of different interrelated factors...

the distance of the computer to the wireless router
wireless security settings on the network
number of devices using the wireless
any obstructions like walls, ceilings or furniture in the signal path
wireless interference (which is almost always present to some degree) from cordless phones, other wireless networks in the area, wireless security/camera systems, etc.

Try a test and turn off all computers, iPhones, etc except a newer laptop. Locate the laptop near the AirPort Extreme...but as far away as possible from cordless phones, other electronics like a TV or amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. and check the speed of the wireless connection.

Then move the laptop a few rooms away so that there are approximately 3-5 walls in the signal path and check the speed again at that location.

What are your results?
