Daylight Saving Time issue Russia

Hi,

tonight both of my MacBook Pro with 10.6.8 and all "software uptodate" changed one hour back. This is wrong, as Russia decided not to change clocks anymore.

In the settings Date & Time:

- set time date and time automatically: yes (server: time.euro.apple.com)

- time zone: Moscow Standard Time

Of course I can change to "manual" operation - going back to Stonehenge style.

Any suggestions what to do?

Thanks for your support!

Bernd

PS: the same problem on my iPad2 (iOS 4.3.5) and iPhone 3GS (iOS 4.3.3)

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I tried

zdump -v /etc/localtime in terminal

and got wrong timezone settings up to 2038 year

like that:

/etc/localtime Sat Mar 26 22:59:59 2011 UTC = Sun Mar 27 01:59:59 2011 MSK isdst=0

/etc/localtime Sat Mar 26 23:00:00 2011 UTC = Sun Mar 27 03:00:00 2011 MSD isdst=1

/etc/localtime Sat Oct 29 22:59:59 2011 UTC = Sun Oct 30 02:59:59 2011 MSD isdst=1

/etc/localtime Sat Oct 29 23:00:00 2011 UTC = Sun Oct 30 02:00:00 2011 MSK isdst=0

/etc/localtime Sat Mar 24 22:59:59 2012 UTC = Sun Mar 25 01:59:59 2012 MSK isdst=0

/etc/localtime Sat Mar 24 23:00:00 2012 UTC = Sun Mar 25 03:00:00 2012 MSD isdst=1

/etc/localtime Sat Oct 27 22:59:59 2012 UTC = Sun Oct 28 02:59:59 2012 MSD isdst=1

it means that tzdata package is not updated yet

i found ver tzdata 2011g on 10.6.8 SL

but current version of tzdata package with correct timezone data is 2011m

Dear Apple, please correct this bug.

First of all, there are no Apple employees in these forums; it's user-to-user, so we have nothing to do with reporting.

Next, it's hardly Apple's fault that the Russian government decided to abolish the Summer/Winter time difference.

Thirdly, as we found when this issue arose with Egypt earlier in the year, it's not a simple matter to wave a hand and change the settings. It has nothing to do with the time server.

Make sure that Apple is getting feedback from all you Russian users by using the Feedback form. The more they get the sooner you're likely to get an update. And it does require a Software Update to change the time zone settings.

Meanwhile, I'm afraid you'll have to use the workarounds for now.

Thanks for the suggestion dear djfio - very useful!

I wanted to do it the right way and have the Europe/Moscow file linked to the /etc/localtime. However, after downloading the latest tzdata from iana (here: http://www.iana.org/time-zones ) and compile the europe section with zic (sudo zic europe) & the proper Moscow file was created (it is different and smaller than the older one) when I link it with /etc/localtime it still gives the wrong time as GTM+3

Is it a matter of cached data, I wonder... Inspecting the Europe file of tzdata2011m I see that now Moscow is porperly defined as 4 hours ahead of GMT.
