Iphone 4 manual volume control buttons faulty?

I've had this Iphone4 for a year now and woke up to a strange problem!

when I load up my music player in my iphone there is no volume slider bar, and when my phone is on the home screen with all my apps, manually pressing the volume + and - buttons brings up the usual "ring volume" but doesnt change the levels, (no white dots indacating volume) however when I have my earphones plugged into the headphone jack the buttons work fine and can adjust the volume and the music player has the volume slider at the bottom like normal!! it's very frustrating. I took it to the apple store and they had no clue so have booked an appointment for a few days time but was wondering if any of you have any solutions? when I go into settings - sound I can press the + and - buttons and it makes the volume slider go up and down, so none of this makes any sense!

any help would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks,

Josh

Hi,

I have the same problem since I upgraded to ios 5. i restored many times the ios, but it doesn't work !

- the slider volume bar has disappeared. ==> No sound in applications, music, games... It is impossible to control the volume with the + and - buttons.

- the phone rings and I can hear/change the ring tones in the sound menu (the + and - buttons work)

- the message/mail don't ring , and I can't hear them in the sound menu

- During a phone call, if I put the conversation on speakers ==> it works and the volume bar reappears. I can control the volume with + and - buttons. But when the conversation is over, the bar disappears again.

- With the headphones, everything is ok!

Can you confirm that your problem is similar to mine ?

It sounds like a ios 5 bug, isn't it?!

Hi,

My phone seems to be fixed now :-)

I'm not sure about how I fixed it, but this is what happened :

- I cleaned the headphone jack socket with alcohol and Q-tip

- I cleaned the charging socket with alcohol.

==> It still didn't work after the cleaning operation.

==> then I reset the phone but I still wasn't working

==> I got depressed :-), and gave the phone back to my wife.

==> 2 days after, the phone was working again :-D

I think the cleaning operation did fix the problem. But I'm not sure...

The only manipulations that my wife did with the phone are setting the alarm clock, and changing the ring tones.

Hope that helps.
