iPhone 4, VW Golf Bluetooth issues

Just got a brand new 2012 Golf TDI with navigation. My iPhone 4 with iOS 5 paired just fine via Bluetooth and the phone part works awesomely well. The problem is with music via Bluetooth. I cannot browse, select or play the content of my phone from the car system. Everything is grayed out. It will play audio only if I manually play it from the phone itself. Apple tells me that VW will need to update their software, iOS 5 being so new. Fair enough, I will check with VW. The dock connector cable works great though, but you have to select it in the Music app because it connects to Bluetooth by default.

But the most annoying thing is that when I turn the car off and walk away, the audio part of the phone (ringers and alerts) still think it's connected to the car and stays at minimum volume. I have to manually restore it every time I leave the car. Now that is obviously an Apple issue. The phone should come back to the state it was in before connecting to the car's Bluetooth. If I forget to restore volume, I may miss important phone calls or texts...User uploaded file

I'm also having volume level issues when using Bluetooth and iPhone 4 with IOS 5.0.1

When my iPhone makes a Bluetooth connection to the stereo in my Toyota Yaris, 50% of the time there is no problem, but the other 50% of the time there is no audio. It seems that the volume of the iPhone music player magically sets to zero. Most of the time I can restore audio by pressing one of the volume buttons on the side of the iPhone. This is inconvenient, however, as it is supposed to be "hands-free". Also i often find later on (after leaving the car) that the ringer volume on the iPhone has magically dropped to zero and I have to reset the iPhone volume levels in the Configuration app. I have the phone configured so that the external volume buttons do not affect the ringer volume because I initially thought that maybe I was accidentally pressing these buttons and lowering the volume. That was not the case however..

I have downloaded and installed the 5.1 update tonight on my iPhone 4. After it did its thing, I jumped at the chance to try out the bluetooth in the TDI.

Unfortunately for me, I still have my original problem: upon successful sync with the Jetta, the iPhone just begins playing music, even when not being listened to. If I do not stop it, it will chew through the battery during my hour drive to work.

I had taken the vehicle into my dealer and they informed me that there were no software updates in the system for my Fender audio. They also believed my problem was simply me having the Bluetooth "Auto Play" being selected in the radio settings (it wasn't, but I said nothing). I was told that the Master Technician's iPhone worked seamlessly with the car. So essentially, I was given the run around.

I had hoped this update would fix this issue of mine.

CanderaNaha, yes I have. That was my last, cross my fingers moment last night in the vehicle before quitting. Same result. As soon as the now newly added iPhone syncs to the system, it immediately begins playing a random track.

In February I had received a loaner VW during routine preventative maintenance on my Jetta. That CC had bluetooth, but not the Fender system. My iPhone worked perfectly with that vehicle. With BT Auto Play disabled in settings, I had to manually select a song and press play to begin streaming music.

This leads me to believe that it is something to do with the VW Fender system specifically. What, I don't know. I had hoped this 5.1 update would fix it without me dealing with my dealer again. I get the feeling they also don't know and really just don't want to be dealing with this.

Hallelujah!! iOS 5.1 update has fixed the ringer/alerts issue!! I did unpair my phone (both on the phone and the car) prior to trying it. Finally!

Audio issues still remain though. Can't navigate the phone content from the car radio. Everything except BT Volume is greyed out. Sounds great and seems consistent though. Could be a VW issue?

I just want to throw out a high-five to Apple for finally fixing this issue. I bought a 2012 Honda CR-V in January, and I experienced the same problem with the ringer volume. In fact, I only noticed it when I overslept the first time, since I use my phone as my alarm. I would check the ringer volume after I got out of my car, and before I went to bed, and sometimes I just turned off the bluetooth altogether to ensure it didn't happen. However, as many of you said, I forgot on occasion, and then I overslept and/or missed important calls. It was so frustrating... I can only imagine how frustrating it was for everyone who had bluetooth-enabled vehicles when the iOS 5 update first came out. I only had to deal for two and a half months!

Anyway, I'm pretty stoked that it is resolved. Thanks for updating the thread, CanderaNaha. I don't know if I would have noticed that iOS5 resolved the issue since it has become such a habit to check the ringer volume now.

Woohoo 5.1!!

For me, the new iOS 5.1 has fixed the "main volume turning down all the way when you leave the car" problem (no need to unpair and re-pair the phone and car), but not the "playing bluetooth media through the car stereo" problem. When I try to use the BT media to play music through my iphone, I still have to pull out the phone and manually start the music and turn the volume up (it resets to zero for some reason). But since this latter issue is not nearly as big a deal as the main (ringer) volume turning to zero when exiting the car (I too missed many calls/texts and at least 1 alarm due to forgetting to manually turn it back up again), I guess I'm happy with at least the partial fix! (I have a 2012 VW GTI.)

Got the same problem as orionreplay... Bought a 2012 golf tdi two weeks ago. As soon as I start the car, the BT pairs and my iphone 4s automatically starts playing a song. This happens even if the radio is set to satellite, AM/FM, etc, and therefore my iphone plays for no reason draining the battery. I have to manually pause the song on my iphone to get it to stop everytime I get in the car. Does anyone know if this is a problem with my VW or my iphone???

AD-Ohio,

Still same issue as before. I needed some preventative maintenance and during that time was given a CC as a loaner. It did not have the Fender system. I had no issue with my paired iPhone in that car. Receive my Fender audio Jetta TDI back and the music playing issue occurs yet again. I have deleted my phone and re-paired. Same issue.

I contacted my dealer. My dealer says I have the latest software for the Fender system. They continue to scratch their heads, but I think they hope I blow away. I contact bigger VW and they stand behind whatever the dealer says. They claim if I am still dissatisfied, then I can use another dealer.

So for now, I wait. I know my phone worked as advertised in another VW, but it was not a Fender system. I know I have received the latest Apple update for the iPhone. I can only believe that it is a Fender issue within the VW. So I wait for something from VW, I guess.

My problem is that when my iPhone 4S (IOS 5.1.1) is hooked up to the Bluetooth on my 2012 VW Jetta TDI, everything works great (make/receive calls, play music, game audio, etc.) EXCEPT that all my notifications for text messages, email, etc. are muted. I thought there was some way to turn off the Bluetooth audio part while leaving the phone functions on but I can't find it. That might not have fixed the problem, but I wanted to give it a try... Any suggestions?????

Count me in. Just got an iPhone 4S with IOS 5.1.1. I paired it easily with my 2011 VW Sportwagen TDI via Bluetooth and the phone works fine, but have no ability to control of any of the iPhone media functions through the car controls. I can only get music/podcast playback if I do it manually through the iPhone, which to me defeats the purpose. I'm almost better off continuing to use my trusty old iPod in the direct media interface.

I've got to think that with this problem being so widespread, there has to be a fix forthcoming!

May 27, 2012 9:55 AM in response to PinotNoir12

I guess the question at hand is: is it Volkswagen or Apple? We've had a couple iPhone updates in just a few months, yet the problems still exist. I think it is in VW's court.

Meanwhile, my 8 year old iPod is coming in handy in my Jetta. I keep it stuffed in the glovebox and it plays via the touch screen in my TDI.

My iPhone? Still playing automatically as soon as the vehicle is fired up, whether the head unit is powered on or not. If I choose to use it anyway, I have to keep one eye on the road as I manipulate the iPhone to select songs. When I choose not to use it and listen to satellite instead, I am left with no sounds for any alerts from the iPhone. Just silent buzzing.
