How can I sort my projects manually?

How can I sort my projects manually in Aperture 3?

User uploaded file

When I try to move a project up or down, it doesn't stay at the position where I want it, but jumps to the top!

(I think this worked before, but now not any more.)

Thanks.

I can't confirm this behaviour on my machine, but I am running Lion, not Snow Leopard. Also, my Library is a managed library, is yours managed too?

On my other Mac, where I have that old Library (without the problem) I'm also running Lion.

My library is also managed.

Test this again with a new Test Library by dropping folders into the Aperture window and trying to arrange them.

If it does not work with a new Test library in a new test account, then probably it is a bug.

I did it (new test account, new test library, dropped folders). No problem!

I recommend to use such a test Library to find out, if rebuilding the Library can solve this problem.

I will transfer the problematic library to the Lion-Mac and then rebuild it over night to see if it helps.

If rebuilding the library does not help, you can save some work by creating new projects and moving the images from your old projects to the new projects. That would be much quicker than importing all those files again.

Thanks for the tip - I will do this as the last option.

"Der Weg ist das Ziel - aber der Weg is a nix."

So I better should pick a different motto - hmm? But I try to enjoy the way, what is left to do, once you will have reached the final destination.

Any other ideas...?

I'll pass that question on to Frank, if he is still with us. The only solution I can see right now is using the import panel to import your projects instead of the drag -and -drop -method, that at least seems to work. and not to corrupt the library further by dropping folders.

Good night for today

Hi leonieDF

Sure hope you don't stop here!

I have the exact same problem, and have tried everything without any sollution.

Strange thing is, that if you click 'Projects' in the top left corner of the Library browser, then you get all the projects in the right order in the image browser to the right. You can even choose to sort in order of 'Library' wich gives you the order of your Library list (wich you can't edit due to the problem).

This is truely annoying!!

Have also seen lots of other threads on the net, but all with no sollutions.

Hi Bo-T,

perhaps you may wish to start your own thread, if you are having similar problems?

Then we can try to collect all the clues to your problem with respect to system software, hardware, etc.

Most times the causes to a problem are very different, even if the symptoms appear to be the same. Here, I am sorry to say, I am running out of ideas, with no new clues to go on.

@ coxorange, have you discovered any new clues by now? That would be great.

Hi all!

Well, I might have some news to this isue.

As an experiment I tried to set the setting in the Library browser to 'sort by name'.

Then the folders and projects re-arranged accordingly, and after that, I was able to start sorting them manually (setting still on 'by name').

After sorting the folders and projects I checked the setting, and it had now changed to 'manual'.

I've tried to shut down/restart apperture and it seems to keep the manual sorting.

Try it out. It might be a solution.

Hi Bo-T,

That is an interesting observation. I tried it, after setting the sorting to "By name", I could manually rearrange the projects, but that did not change the sort setting - it stayed as "by name", even after quitting and reopening. It is still saying "by name", but the manual arrangement stayed.

Let's see what will happen in the long run.

Léonie,

Are you sure? Aperture's normal behavior is to set the sort order to manual on a container as soon as any item in that container is manually moved.

Perhaps you are looking at the sort setting up a level from the container you manually moved the projects in? It can get tricky with a hierarchy because each level can react differently when settings in higher or lower levels change.

Thank you Frank,

I was very worried by what I observed.

I have a deeply nested folder structure, and thus I could only set the sort criteria for subfolders.

After quitting I checked the settings in the same subfolder I manually rearrange and it said "By name", but was sorted manually.

And for good measure I repeated that test three times with different subfolders 😢

so, what do you see in SL?

That's bizarre, shouldn't be happening.

If you manually move an item in a container then that container's sort order should switch to manual. Even more so if as you say the items are not sorted by name but that is what the sort order says it is set to.

Remember we're talking about the container you are moving the items about in. If it is part of an hierarchy than folders higher up could have different sort orders set on them. You have to look at the actual container you are moving the items in.
