HDMI audio stops when screen sleeps

Setup:

Mac mini 2010 connected to Denon AVR 2311 via HDMI; video out from AVR to Samsung LED TV.

Background:

With Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed, when the screen sleeps, the audio (from iTunes, Spotify, etc.) over HDMI would continue to function, even with no video output to the AVR.

Issue:

With Lion installed 10.7.2, when the screen sleeps, the HDMI audio is now stopping too. To prevent the audio from stopping, I have to set the screen sleep to never, which is undesireable.

Is this behaviour expected with Lion and HDMI output? Are others experiencing this issue?

Many thanks,

Daryl

Guys, do you think Apple even read these posts? I mean how many Lion updates have gone by after this, and many other posts, were created? I think they're too busy focusing on their earnings to care.

I have recently had big issues with Apple.

1. Mac OSX Lion HDMI audio after sleep / screen off.

2. That stupid camera button on the lock screen of the iPhone (why can't I choose to turn it off?) slide to unlock should never be shorter.

3. Why change iChat to iMessage to Messages on OSX mountain lion. Really? Uniform would be cool! call everything iChat.

anyways rant over.

10.8.0 has reversed this issue -- now, if you have and HDMI type devide set as the target for your sound output, it completely disables display sleep. I can confirm that just selecting any other device for audio output allows the display to sleep (and audio to continue playing), even if you leave the HDMI device plugged in and video signal is being delivered over it.

Exactly, Mountain Lion reverses it. It took me a while to figure it out and I tried to manipulate it with a hot corner, but then audio stops ;-)

It's really annoying because I run it through my TV and I don't want the display to run like for hours and hours just to listen to music. So I want to get the sleep back (with audio playing)!

One solution that popped to my mind is to just use a "black" screensaver. My TV, unfortunately, does not have any "display off" function (well, why should it, it's a TV...).

FIX IT!

Hate being a sceptic but have anyone of you actually contacted Apple support about this?

I have.

It's the first 'official' mention of the problem (according to the guy on the other end of the phone).

If Apple doesn't get any official reports of a problem do you really think they will do anything about some of the rubbish that normally appears on forums by people who dont know what their doing?

What perceneage of people on forums are as clued in as the people on this post?

Would you invest any time chasing some of the rainbows that would appear here?

Support is there for a reason...to get feedback and then try and fix issues with priorities all based on the number of calls they get regarding a problem.

Remember guys, Microsoft supoport is so much personable, approachable and most of all, accessible.

If you hadn't figured, I'm being sarcastic!

It's a phone call guys and would take less time than putting another post on here.

If you want to 'shove it up him', tell him to his face!

I'd like to think that APPLE itself is using MAC as computer and not wnidows one.....

I can't belive no-one but we, have this annoying problem. No-one of the little "NERDs" who're programming lion have never tryed to put HDMI in a TV just for listening to music ?

"according to the guy on the other end of the phone", guys to the other end of the phone are there to listen and be kind, and calm down the peolple.... they will say everything for keep you continuing belive that your prolem is important for them...

And at the end support forum is free.. and is there to undestand if you are only or not!

Hi, I posted in this thread earlier, having used 10.7.2 or 10.7.3 at the time. I believe I may bring GOOD NEWS for some of you. I recently updated to 10.7.4 (still Lion, not Mountain Lion) and my computer is MacBook Pro 13" (mid or late 2010).

This issue mainly affected me when i wanted to use iTunes and play the music with my mac screnn off to save energy. A few days ago I unintentionaly closed the lid thinking I would put my mac to sleep mode. However, I did not notice that my HDMI was still in (HDMI to DVR). My Mac then switched the audio and video to DVR and TV and did not stop playing the music. Closing the lid works for me as the mac display is now off and I can turn the TV off as well and only music plays on.

Therefore this has been the solution for my problem. I don't know why it works now and did not work then. If it was because some of you guys contacted Apple about this issue, thank you very much. I am non-US resident and don't really know if any support works where I live.
