Diacritic Characters

I understood that with OS 10.7 if a key is held down it will display the related diacritic characters - for example, if E is held down it would display é, among others. This feature does not appear to be working and I wonder if the feature is available with Lion.

I find that if I have Key Repeat in Keyboard Preferences turned on, the diacritic character function works in Apple Applications (e.g. Pages, Text Editor) and repeating will not function, but in non-Apple applications the keys simply repeat.

If I turn off Key Repeat, the diacritic character function does not work anywhere, nor do the keys repeat in any application.

How's that for intutive behaviour?

I am not certain what you are saying here, but key repeat has to be turned on in System Preferences, Keyboard for diacritical stuff to work. And the delay until repeat setting controls how long it takes for the special character pop-up menu to appear. If this does not work for you, what happens when you press and hold, say, the e key? Nothing? Repeated e? Does the undesired behavior persist in a new (or Guest) user account?
