iCloud mail - POP client password issue?

Up until last night both my wife and I could check our email via POP clients.

Since about Midnight Sydney time, IMAP is fine but both POP clients reports password issues (passwords unchanged and are of course the same as the ones that do work for IMAP).

The glib system status page says "everything" is fine (one green tick covers all services).

Thoughts?

I understand that you want to use a POP only client with an iMap only account, just don't understand why.

It's obvious that you don't understand why. You have given some of the most obtuse answers. Do you bother to read the posts before you stick your 1¢ in?

The problem is that for many of us, POP is far more convenient. I, for one, do not need to carry all of the email that I have on the Mac with me on my phone or iPad. I prefer that when I get home, all email is downloaded and cleared from my other devices.

I should have that choice. If there had been some notice that a switch to iMap would be required to use iCloud, I'd have stayed with MobileMe through next summer. But, there wasn't.

I don't want to use Google mail, as I frankly wouldn't trust Google as far as privacy goes. I don't want my messages archived for posterity, even as I delete them. I've been using my .Mac address for many years. I'd like it to work as it has for all of those years.

I repeat. It should be the end-user's choice.

I'm happy that you knew in advance. I didn't, and as evidenced by the various people posting here, nor did many others. There was NO notice given during the changeover. Again, if there had been, I'd have stayed on the old system into next summer.

But, to repeat, it should be MY choice as to which system I use. It can't have been much of a strain on Apple's resources to maintain both systems, considering that they've done it for years.

I SO agree with you Paul Margulies. We should have a choice. Since a couple of days my whole email system is totally screwed up, where before (with the POP) I knew exactly where everything was, and I feel the same as you do, I only need full email on my desktop. Other devices are just for temporary logging and checking. It is not up to Apple to decide what "should" work for us. Just like you I had no idea that cloud was going to be imap only.

Furthermore I have not a lot of use for the cloud as it does not even seem to work at all for me. But that is another discussion...

With the changes my iphone has problems too. I am not getting any mail on the phone, even though I know I have new mail... Infuriating!

I did give feedback on the provided link and I think all the ones who want pop back should do the same.

Once more: the link to give the feedback is here:

Just thought I'd post an update.

Received my call from the iCloud Express Lane team yesterday.

First level person was suprised that POP didn't work. We checked settings, etc.

Then escalated to 2nd level person who was also suprised.

Went through and configured another email client (Outlook - Office 2011) and it failed too.

Case number allocated and being pushed further up the chain.

Certainly no comment about "iCloud is IMAP only" or "you can't have POP on iCloud".

Will keep you up to date and share any solution.

It's weird that POP still works for my girlfriend. Her iTools, then .Mac and later MobileMe account used to be an e-mail only account, linked to my account. Now of course, with the changeover to iCloud, it's her own account. But still, they used to be linked. And for me POP wasn't working anymore, yet for her it still is. I have switched to IMAP in the mean time and am okay with it. For now. If and when Apple officially decides to re-enable POP for iCloud, then I'll definitely switch back. But until then I'm fine, I guess.

Mark,

Did you ever get anywhere with the POP issue? My Apple Mail client just started giving me password errors this weekend. I searched around and found your thread.

I've been using mac.com for 10 years now. I switched to icloud and now my email is broken.... no warning or notice. It was even hard to find anything about their dropping POP3 posted online.

Forwarding is not an elegant option.

Not really,

As mentioned earlier the “iCloud Express” people (it was escalated) were initially confised as to why it was now “broken” and promised to get back to me with an update / fix.

That was what 2 weeks + ago now and I’m now trying to re establish contact with them. 😟

So no good news yet.

I ended up resorting to the forwarding but agree I’d rather not do it if I didn’t have to.

This started happening for me as well last week, seemingly at random. Everything was working fine after I transitioned to iCoud late 2011, and then the password issue for Mail on my old Powerbook G4 cropped a few weeks back. I changed the password through icloud, and everything worked again for a couple of days. I then had to rechange the password, and the old .mac account stopped being able to access mail on the old mail.mac.com server. (Can still send.) Does anyone know if we can just add a new account, with the IMAP server specified? Has that worked for anyone? And what is the new server name to use? (mail.icloud.com, or whatever?) I have had no luck, the server just times out.

I should also say I've been a loyal Mac customer for almost a decade. I was told by the tech person, when I finally resorted to calling in, that I'd have to pay for help on the phone. Why? Nothing is broken on my end... *** is happening to Apple? Steve Jobs passes on, and they turn into maniacs! I'm truly ******. You have no idea how many people I have turned onto Apple over the last 10 years.

mail.mac.com is not the correct server for iCloud. As you are on a G4 you are not running an iCloud-compliant system, and therefore your Mail application has not been set up correctly for iCloud. You can set Mail up manually, at least as far back as Tiger, though none of iCloud's other facilities will work:

Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard

Entering iCloud email settings manually in Tiger
