Font Book - OS X Lion Default Fonts

Methinks you're wrong. I just checked one, STFangsong and it's on SL and Lion. Start with Font Management in OS X

A large number are wrong. You can look at this list and remove those present on it from yours:

I don't know why your SL install would be missing them. These two Hebrew fonts have been standard in OS X since at least 10.3 and installed by default since 10.4

They are also on the non-Apple list of 10.6 fonts (optionally not installed) at

They would have been missing in Snow Leopard only if you did a selective install and turned off the installation of Additional Fonts. Otherwise, they are part of the Snow Leopard installation.

Yup, so I'm not sure how just those two could be missing from the SL install.

May I add-on?

It seems to me that the list of required fonts grows with each new version of MacOS, and thus the number of fonts visible in app font menus.

(I think "required" =~ the set of fonts that Font Book refuses to disable, yes?)

My preference is to have the absolute minimum number of fonts enabled, because that's all I use. Some apps get a bit balky when called upon to display a huge, long list of fonts.

in the past I have used the command line and sudo to move fonts I really can't imagine needing out of the system font folder to an archive location, but this gets a bit tedious, and I'm not quite certain what I'm risking.

Is there a better way?

Alternative wayof asking: No offense intended to the speakers of these languages, but I have no conceivable use for the Arabic, Pashto, Persian, and Urdu characters in the Geeza Pro font. Why can I not at disable it?

I've written a long article on fonts, the first part of which is a list of minimum fonts in each version of OS X from 10.3.x forward. baltwo linked to it in the second post of this thread.

As you found, there are certainly more fonts that Apple/Font Book consider "required" which are not. Braille? Not having any problem with my vision, why would I need those? Any of the Asian Kanji fonts? No use to me.
