convert 25fps to 24fps using Cinema tools or Compressor?

Hello all,

I have a completed video file that is: 25fps, 1080p h264 video codec with a .mov container.

I will be converting this down to standard def and into 24fps for authoring onto a dvd

So what is the best program to use for the first step of converting the frame rate?

Compressor or cinema tools? What is the step by step process?

And the audio pitch, where/ how do you change it to +4.17 ??

Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

The new file is not showing up anywhere. Here are the steps it allows me to take:

1. open cinema tools in applications folder

2. create new database

3. Choose default database settings: Film standard 35mm 4p. Video tc rate: 24fps , sound tc rate: 24fps. telecine speed: 24

4.name cinema tools database file

5. two boxes available : the list viewer and the detail viewer

6. file- open clip. selected the clip which pops up in the video streamer box with all options under the identify box Grayed out (the conform button and the reverse telecine button) except for "Enter into Database" button

- Under the overhead menu the "Conform" option under "Clip" is always grayed out

7. Enter into database. title as scene 1 and take 1.

8. now more options are not grayed out. conform still is though. I change the TC Rate from 25 to 24 under the video section.

9. Once selected the Save and Revert buttons are no longer grayed out. Clicked Save

- those tow buttons than become grayed out once again and nothing happens. The confrom button is grayed out the entire time.

- Under file the Batch Conform button is always available But I do not know what to do with it. When I select the file the box gives the option to conform to 24fps and I than push conform. It takes only a sencond but when I go back into the skipped folder where I selected the clip there is no new file created (just the original) so it seems like nothing happened.

In the folder where the video file is selected: A Skipped folder is created with it in there and there is also a conformed 24 folder but it is empty. There is also a conform.log file which will open apple script.

tried it- does it matter that when I choose the file, it is coming from the Skipped folder that it was placed in for some reason.

When I select it, the video viewer window pops up, but all buttons are greyed out except for the Analysis tab (which is useless) so I than went file- batch conform. chose the video file again and clicked conform to 24fps. The process happened in a second and then the viewer window dissappeared. Looked into the external hd and the file is still there in the skipped folder and the conformed folder is still empty.

Is a new file suppose to be created, and what kind of file would it be? a new .mov file?

Don't understand why everything is greyed out. Is it because i'm working from an external drive, or that the file is h262 video codec with a .mov container?

Would the conform function straight through fcp timeline work better?

No new files are made. The CONFORM modifies the original files...it changes them. It doesn't make new ones. If you want to have originals at 25fps, and then new ones at 23.98...you need to manually duplicate the files and modify your copies.

And CONFORM does not work with GOP formats...like HDV and XDCAM, or H.264. H.264 should NEVER be used for editing in FCP anyway...it really causes problems. All footage needs to be converted to ProRes.

Alright, I put the h264 video codec file into compressor and converted it using app pro res 422

It looked great.

Than I open cinema tools opened the clip the conform button was available to push. I conformed it to 24fps from 25

The orginal duration of the video was 17:15 and now the duration is longer at 17:58

If I am taking away frames why would it be longer?

I put it into fcp and the dialog is out of sync with the last few seconds of the video having mute audio because track already went through

How do I fix this syncing issue?

When you conform, you aren't removing ANY frames. You are taking all the frames that currently exist, and changing the rate at which they play back. All the same frames, different frame rate. Which is why we use this to convert 60fps to 24fps for great smooth slow motion. Same frames, just playing back at a different rate.

You will now have to adjust the speed of the audio...if it was recorded separately. Not sure on the math on that, never had to do it. Yeah, converting 25fps to 24fps, and then trying to sync with audio? It won't match up at all.

Your source file is 25 fps accrding to your OP.

Are you in a country that uses the 25 fps PAL standard?

If the answer to the above is yes, why are you trying to make life overly difficult for yourself?

If you are in a country that uses the NTSC television standard, good luck with it. I readily admit to not knowing jack about all that NTSC wierdness. That's what Shane is here for. Listen to whatever he tells you.

Here is another take on the mess -

Edit the whole thing as PAL.

Export a self contained video using "Current Settings"

Bring that into Compressor and turn on Frame Controls to Best to do the conversion to 23.98 ProRes at the same pixel dimensions

It will take a long time.

The resulting video will play back for the same period of time as the original.

Take that file back into Compressor to create your m2v and ac3 files to build the DVD.

Have fun.

are you talking about this Pitch function: Effects>Audio Filters>Apple>AUPitch

This function doesn't adjust syncing...

I have already done this: "Export the FINAL...export the whole film at 25fps...as it was edited. Take the exported file, and CONFORM that...audio included."

thats what created the audio delay... doesn't the conform fuction on automatically include the audio? can you expand upon these directions?

As X says, if you use Compressor it will take a long time.

I don't like the Compressor route because apart from taking an eternity to render, it will never play back quite as smoothly as the original because you are omitting/creating new interpolated frames.

I find that the Cinema Tools conforming method is incredibly quick and playback is silky smooth.

Furthermore, a difference of 1fps cannot be seen (at least by normal human beings) and you almost certainly won't need to adjust the pitch of audio either.
