iOS 5.0.1 problems - Searching for Network and battery life still isnt great.

So I dont know if anyone else is having this problem but I upgrade to iOS 5.1 today and it seems to me that my network is being dropped A LOT today. I know it probably doesnt help that I'm on T-Mobile with a factory unlocked iPhone 4 but it seems that before I upgraded, I was able to keep my network for a longer amount of time. Also, I think iOS 5.1 actually made the battery life worse. Im down to 40% and thats without any calls, a few texts and very little wifi surfing.

Reply if your having the same problem lol

I can't believe how bad this new OS is. I thought you guys would fix the 3G issue and i end up downloading an even worse OS. Can't make calls, my battery life seems worse and you have done absolutely nothing to resolve the problem of the phone prefering Edge over 3G. I honestly can't believe i made the switch from a galaxy S2 to an iphone 4S. I thought you guys were better than this.

Having both an iPad 2 & an iPhone 4S I can attest to 5.1 being a miserable upgrade.

After upgrading to iOS 5.1 on my iPad 2 downloads more often than not do not show their download status--meaning, if I go to "purchased" in the app store and start re-downloading my apps I would typically see the apps queued for download. Instead I see nothing at all.. It *appears* to be doing nothing then suddenly some apps will start showing up once they have been completely downloaded.

I nightly stream Netflix on my iPad connected via bluetooth to a $140 jawbone. I have never had any problem except for occasional pairing issues before the last 5.0.1 update. Now, after the 5.1 update I'll get about a quarter of the way through a Netflix stream and bluetooth will start cutting out and eventually become entirely unuseable to the point where I just give up on the show.

It does not appear to be a wireless isue in that I can listen to audio WITHOUT bluetooth and the show will stream.

It's a shame we're at the mercy of an untested, glitchy update and can't go back to previous versions.

For anyone having a problem with their iPhone or iPad connecting to wifi and maintaining a connection I might have found a fix...start by resetting your network settings under General-Reset-Reset Network Settings. When it turns back on, connect to your wifi that you normally use. It may say unable to connect, but as long as you have the password correct, continue hitting enter until your device connects. After this, "sleep" the device by hitting the lock button. Leave it alone for about 5 minutes and come back to it and turn it on. If our device is either still on wifi or immediately picks it up, than your done. If it doesnt go back into wifi settings and type in the password one last time. After connecting again the device should start connecting to the wifi normally. The problem is not your wifi router or even the wifi on the device but merely just the code that tells your device to remember the password to the network. If this doesnt work keep repeating the last step until your device remembers the password for good.

This worked for me at least.

That may work for you but for many of us this has been a problem since 5.0 came out. My phone has to be within a few feet of a router to even see the router. If I'm very close to a router there is no problem staying connected. As I walk away I can watch it lose the signal. I was in the Apple store and couldn't even see the wifi. Since my phone is out of warranty they told me they couldn't help. And of course they told me it had nothing to do with their iOS updates. BS.

It worked great until I updated last November.

Upgrading the iOS appears to wipe out your APN settings which is what you need for 3G data connectivity and as a result you have no email or internet access. To fix, you need to re-enter your carrier's APN settings.

(1) Reset your network settings = Settings / General / Reset / Rest Network Settings

(2) Re-Enter APN settings = Settings / Cellular Data / APN or Settings / Mobile Data / APN (if an iPad).

If you don't have a "Cellular Data" tab, you can use the Apple iPhone Configuration Utility to create a Configuration Profile where you have set the correct APN and then Install that to your phone.

AColdStArnolds79,

I had the same issue with my 3gs twice. I had to be within 2 feet of a router to get a useable signal, and at 20 feet I would be dropping connection too frequently to use it. 3G cell data still worked fine though. I think the wifi antenna connection gets slightly flexed over time if you carry it in a back pocket, and eventually loosens or gets disconnected or something. The geniuses couldn't resolve it either time. Clearly something had worked loose, but they couldn't find where, and went with it being defective and replaced. When my wifi started having strength issues, I could flex the phone and see an instant improvement, but then it would drop off again shortly after. Eventually that no longer helped. This also would coincide with the ringer switch going bad, such that if it was set to silent mode, flexing would kick it between silent and ringer over and over.

You will probably just need to get a new phone.

I updated my 3GS about a week ago and the phone itself seems to be snappier but the battery life still ***** and now when I turn on the 3G, it will come up and say "No Service" and I can't do anything on the phone as far as taking and sending text/iMessages, phone calls or anything until I turn the 3G off, then I have to wait 15-20 minutes in order for it to get it's signal back. Apple needs to stop trying to add more features to these phones and sit down and fix the issues they already have with the features these iPhone's already have with iOS 5.1. Then, after they fix the problems and get the actual bugs out of the systems, try and add new features in the updates.

That would be the solution but I don't have that flex issue. Besides this is my company phone. My IT decided they won't support iPhones now so if I get a new phone I have to go back to a bberry. . So I will just put up with this crappy phone for now.

My problems started immediately upon reboot after the 5.0 update last fall. I'm certain it's the update that caused the problem. I had great wifi before the update and have not had it since. My gps started failing at the same time.

And I don't carry my phone in my back pocket. It's in my front pocket in my slacks with a lot of room so no stress on the phone.
