My inbox only displays 10 emails at a time

Just set up my iPhone 4S. Immediately updated to iOS 5.0.1. Used Microsoft Exchange to add Mail, Contacts and Calendar from Gmail. Can send and receive email just fine, but my inbox will only hold 10 messages at a time. If I scroll down to the bottom there's no option to load more messages. I've tried the following:

-turning the phone on and off.

-adjusting in Settings the number of messages to show 50, 100, 200, etc.

-in Exchange, deleting and re-adding the Gmail account.

Can't think of anything else to try because I'm unsavvy. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I should have been more clear about that. The inbox will hold only 10 at a time, so if I get additional mesages, the lower ones get pushed out of the top ten and out of sight. If I search my inbox, the messages I search for will appear, but when I exit out of search, it goes back to just the top ten in my inbox.
