There is clearly huge dissatisfaction from many users about the battery discharge rate of the 4s. I have not owned an iPhone before and, compared to my previous Nokia, the discharge rate is high. We have relatively poor signal strength here and the phone has to work harder. When we stay in Palma in Mallorca my old phone used to go for a week on one charge. It only lasted 48 hours here. I haven't tried this one in Spain yet. You only have to look at the current debate over electric cars. As much as the manufacturers claim they still can't make a really viable vehicle in terms of mileage. We need a Steve Jobs to invent a new form of battery. We ask the iPhone to do everything short of fry eggs without the battery weighing a ton. Maybe we have to accept recharging more often. HOWEVER WHEN THE BATTERY FAILS AS IT EVENTUALLY WILL AND GIVEN THAT THE USER CANNOT ACCESS IT, HOW MUCH IS IT GOING TO COST TO REPLACE? THESE PHONES AREN'T CHEAP TO START WITH. YOU CAN BET YOUR BOTTOM DOLLAR THAT APPLE WON'T REPLACE FREE OF CHARGE.

I found the fix to the battery drain problem. What's draining the battery, at least on the 4s, is when you open an app or anything on your iPhone and close it, it is still running in the background sucking the battery life. You need to close out what is running in the background and to do this, you double tap the device button and you will see your desktop change and at the bottom you will see the apps that are still running. Press on one of the apps and hold it until you see a red circle with a minus sign in it. Tap the red circle and it will close. Close all these running apps and I guarantee you that your battery life will increase bigtime. You have to close apps everytime you use them so they don't run in the background.

Don't waste your time going to the Apple Store and allowing the genius bar to assist you. I went there this weekend which was a 3 hour drive to avoid mail in. The store was located in the Lexington Fayette Maill in Kentucky. After one "genius" (sorry that's ironic) looked at my phone he said it was jailbroken or unlocked which surprised me seeing as how IT's not! This guy seriously thought that unlockit.co.nz a website apn changer was a jailbreak or unlock. He went in the back again and came out saying the same thing. My fiance's "genius" did the same and by the time Manager Shadrack Wild was summoned they were all dumbfounded that he didn't accuse us of a jailbreak he just said I couldn't replicate the black screen and that 3 hour battery life was OK. I called apple while in the store and a friendly advisor that told me to mail them in but bad thing is 650$ per phone they hold until you mail your old phone in.

I had no issues with version iOS 5.0 on my 4s.. The battery was good from charging on a Friday until the next Monday (without heavy usage of course!).

Yesterday I did an update over WiFi to 5.0.1.

With the iphone loaded to 100% in the morning and almost no usage of the iphone it was completely empty in the evening.

THIS IS A DISASTER!

This "fix" has cut the battery life in half!

APPLE - PLEASE FIX THIS!

I actually think this may be something to do with the wifi on the iphone. I had turned off my wifi 2 days ago as my phone kept trying to connect to a network I wasnt intertested in. However, I forgot to switch it on and all day yesterday when I was in work my phone was just using 3G for data. By the end of the day, when my battery level would normally be down to about ~30-40% since iOS 5.0.1, I was surprised to see it was still up around 70%!!

I obviously would need to try this again to confirm, but thought I'd post in here to see if anyone else wanted to try to see if they experienced the same effect!

I havent read through this entire thread, so this may have been suggested before, if so, sorry!

you see thats the problem, apple have not done the basic thing of being able to have a good powerful battery to cope with the processor it uses in the iphone 4s.

Alot of smartphones no matter what the os is ,will use up alot of the power because of the screen, processor ,to name a few things which overall uses alot of power.

I can't see any updates on any os that will help a battery,it needs to be the battery, that needs to be improved.

Maybe in the next release of the iphone, apple may do the basic and simple thing of having a powerful battery,to be able to cope with the whole use of the phone.
