I would agree with you in theory EXCEPT for the fact that hundreds of devices did not suffer battery drainage until they were updated to 5.0.1!! The software caused the processor, or graphics, or whatever to drain the battery, period!!
The software messed things up and for 4 months there has been dead silence from Apple!
Thanks to David CH, I have decent battery life. But, this came at the cost of turning everything off on my 4S. A truly bad situation!

Any news on when is apple going to address this issue..??, any formal statements form apple??
Nothing. They haven't even admitted there is an issue, let alone suggested they're working on a fix.
Thankfully, I'm not stuck with an iPhone anymore. Gladly as I've got another bit of kit on order that needs Bluetooth MAP and I've been reading Apple don't even support that yet!
As I posted a few days ago ... the battery drain culprit my be the 'SETTING TIME ZONE' glich within Location Services. Here is the article I found which discuss the 'problem'.
I've notice serious improvement to my battery life by turning Setting Time Zone to OFF. The only thing you have to lose is less battery drain.
Apple hasto take responsibilityfor the problemof"batteries"ofiphones4s, urgent!!

That was the feeling back in October/November and meant to be fixed with 5.0.1 I believe. Since then, the problems clearly persist in a large number of devices. And no news from Apple.
It's definitely a setting worth turning off (unless it's something you use), but it's not the fix for the vast majority of problems.
This past week, we've already seen reports of iOS 6.0 on server logs. Its almost as if Apple abandoned this iOS and its the Windows ME of iPhone software. Hopefully we will see something this next week at apples iPad event. I've gone and purchased a Samsung Galaxy Note. And the battery is no better on this. But i bought a dock that charges an extra one. Swap them out and I'm fully charged in 30 secs.
I updated to 5.0.1 immediately after it came out on new iPhone 4, and didn't have any battery drain whatsoever, and in fact got better battery life. Then, after about 5 weeks of reading all the battery drain problems everyone was having, I updated 4 or 5 of my apps on iTunes and suddenly I was getting battery drain like crazy. Went through all the steps everyone was posting, shutting things off and only had marginal success. So I decided to go in and take out about 10 of my 92 apps I hardly ever use, and bingo, all battery drain ceased completely. I have all location services on, use Wifi 95 percent of the time, use everything on the phone. No more battery drain. Sure appears as if the problem was in one or more of the apps (or in the update), simple as that. I just wish I could remember which ones they were so I could share.
And forgot to add, I have had zero battery-drain issues for the past month or so. Zero!
Trust me that's acceptable...
compared with me
the battery was 100% sine 30 mins and now 78% , I wish I have your IPhone
BTW I use 4S
I had no battery issues at all on my IPhone 4S, I only had to charge it every 3 to 4 days when it hit 70%
I am on oxygen since I was 30 years old and I carry or keep my phone with me at all times for emergencies. I have always done that, and keeping it on standby, with moderate usage, it would only drain 5 to 10% a day mostly.
Since I updated to 5.1 it's draining almost visibly, It was at 100% and in about 2 to 3 hours, only using one app twice, it was down to 70 percent and I have not added any new apps. This is very upsetting to me. I don't know how to go back to the previous version on my Iphone without wiping it which I don't want to do.
Thanks for all the replies. I was thinking if I should update my 4S to fix the battery life, but after reading this, I'll stick with 5.0.1.
I agree, surprisingly at the start i thought it is great .. i charged in morning and at 1:00 it was 99% , almost 4 hours and 1% drop !!!! , then i left and after an hour or two i see it came to 35%, i mean basically it is erratic not sure why .. sometimes it is great, sometimes it is bad rather very bad .. Need to do more tests ... am going to let it drain tonight ..
Apple has run away on this issue. Getting to be a bit like MS.... They have too many things going and they keep messing things up. This batter like issue is a big issue for users.
I have the Iphone 4s and my phone doesn't even charge as fast as it used to. I've noticed I left it charging for about 5-10 mins and it only goes up about 2-3% less than it used to charge up. I'm new to this Iphone world but I should've never upgraded to ios5.1. Worst decision I've made. Not cool Apple. Makes me very leary of your next upgrade!
