"Unable to verify account information" trying to use Hotmail on iPhone 4 with iOS5

Is anybody else having the same problem?

I'm using an iOS5 iPhone 4 and trying to use Hotmail. I enter my password and everything correctly and it keeps coming up with the "unable to verify account information" message. I've reset my network settings but that didn't help, either. Does anybody know a solution to this? I'd really appreciate any assistance.

Thanks in advance,

iPhone 4, iOS 5

Have you tried removing the account from your iPhone and then readding it?

Hotmail was working just fine on my iPhone until I backed up to iCloud for the first time. I found another Apple discussion about this issue where iCloud features as the main culprit in error messages regarding an incorrect Hotmail password or unverifiable account information. Some people were advising deleting the iCloud account, resetting the network, and opening an iCloud account again without syncing calendars and contacts. Because Hotmail is my least important email account, I just opted to remove it from my phone altogether, and I'll check it via a browser as needed. The above password truncation advice doesn't apply to me because my password is ten characters in length. I don't need to write a haiku every time I have to enter my password. 😝

I have a White 16GB iphone 4S and Hotmail worked fine the first day I started using the phone. Out of the blue yesterday, it game me the error message just like in the topic of this thread.

1. I tried logging on to hotmail on Safari on the phone and it did not work.

The screen then lead me to to changing my password.

2. I changed my password (small letters and numbers. no special characters but it was 14 characters long) to a shorter 8 character password same style (small letters and numbers only)

It now works. I also deleted the account on the phone and intorduced a new one. I hope it helps.

The issue is with your hotmail account. Just sign in to your hotmail account on the computer and then goto account settings and then security info and delete any phone number's and alternate email address and then setup your account on the phone again. reset your phone. issue will be resolved. After setting up your email account you can reverse the changes made to your hotmail account on the computer. TRY IT. IT WILL WORK IF YOU ARE GETTING INCORRECT USERNAME OR PASSWORD error.

I had the same issue after I switched to Outlook from hotmail. Finally I looked at my Microsoft acct. I had set up 2 step verification, & my ipad & iPhone couldn't take those. I went to my Microsoft account settings, clicked on security info, then app passwords--where it reads that some apps don't support security codes. Then I clicked on create a new app password. It gave me a lengthy one to use instead of the one I have & it worked!

Hope this helps some of you.

No need to turn of two-step verification or delete and remake your accounts or anything like that. By doing that you are simply reseting the two-step verification to 'off'. I would advise against that entirely (two-step verification is fundamentally more secure than having a complex password).

Use 'app passwords': Account Settings>Security info>Create new app password

Then it is simply a matter of using this generated password in place of your actual password for your account when signing into Mail when you create the account in iOS.

I've had the same issue cragget. The problem I had was that I had two stage security enabled on my Microsoft account. Once it was disabled I had no problems.

First I deleted the account from the mail accounts

Did a hard restart for good measure

Logged into my Microsoft account through safari and disabled two step security.

Went into the mail accounts and entered the outlook.com account info and it worked

Hope it works,

Cheers

I had the same problem...

Found out it is because I use the two step verification process by Hotmail (which still doesn't deter someone from being able to hack your email).

Anyhow, the steps I took:

1) Go to your Hotmail account on your desktop computer

2) Under your name (top right corner), click on it and click on Account Settings

3) Click on Security and passwords (second option down on left hand pane)

4) Enter your password (if necessary)

5) Click on "Create a new app password" - half way down the screen

App passwords

Some apps and devices (such as Xbox 360, Windows Phone, or mail apps on your other devices) don't support security codes for two-step verification. In these cases, you need to create an app password to sign in. Learn more about app passwords.

Create a new app password

6) It will generate a password for you - enter this password in your iPhone as your Hotmail password

That is it. Alternatively, you can turn off the two step verification and it should use your regular password.

Hope that helps.
