iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now and have had much better sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

Got my new iphone 4s yesterday ... did the ios update and within the day the battery was drained. Found this post and followed the instructions and wow what a difference. Counting my lucky stars for finding this post .. thanks 'davidch' for sharing! Perhaps there is room for more improvement ... but I have been using the phone quite a bit today and now it is late evening (NZ time) and it is sitting on 70%. At this rate I shold get a couple of more days out of it. Maybe the re-setting-up of the phone is required for the ios update to do its work? Great phone!

Hi Davidch,

I have my new phone now. What should I do to improve battery life?

Let it completely drain out for the first time and full charge?

Should I turn it off completely when I charge it or just slide off the phone and let it charge?

I will follow your instruction but I already returned the first phone because of battery defect.

I would like to try this new one with correct settings.

Thanks for your help.

davidch, Thanks for the advice. After I did the reset my battery life improved significantly. I used to be able to watch the battery drain 2-3% in 15 minutes while in standby. After the reset I got 6 hours 44 minutes usage 1 day 22 hours standby and 5% battery left. I'm happy with this result.

I did let the battery drain not once but twice after the reset and I think it may have even improved further after the 2nd battery drain.

Thanks again davidch.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

When you do this process recommended by davidch, would you need to fully charge your phone first before starting this process or does it matter?

For example, I charged my phone for a couple hours last night and when I took if off the charger, my battery was at about 95%. I have not charged it since then. My phone is around 50% right now, so would it matter if I began the process now??

I've done the reset process, but I'm still not happy with my iPhone 4s (16Gb, Black).

It looks like that when I'm on wifi, battery performs quite good in standby (1-2%/hour. Before the reset process it was 6-7%), but when I'm out somethings strange happens...

Today for example I've been outside, so NO WIFI. I've taken it off the charger at 6 AM, and with almost NO USAGE (only listened 20 minutes to music, with headphones), at 1 PM my battery was at 75%. From there, with ABSOLUTELY NO USAGE, at 7PM it was at 8%...

My usage stats are: 4h27m usage, 12h52m standby, but my real usage was not over 1h MAX!

I think this is not normal... What do you think?

Should I call the Apple Care?

Thanks!

I'm so confused. How are you guys getting 2-3 days? Is it a trick? I mean I get 4hr usage and 18hour stand by the end of the day but no where near you guys. Is there any way to check which battery our phones have and compare? Maybe ask apple or something. I'm so confused here that I'm thinking of doing a replacement. Also I've done over 15 full discharge since the reset. Help.
