Wow, good news. This calls int question my original theory that Apple was likely subcontracting refurbishment, including the remanufacture of new cases. This could still be the case, but now seems unlikely unless the whole process turned out to be more costly than just cutting loose with new Nano's. It also vindicates those who question how Apple could possibly have enough backstock to meet demand.
Frankly, I loved my little 1st-gen. Beautiful design, and felt just right in the hand. I never mastered the clickwheel, though; I found it a bit finicky, but that's more my clumsiness and periodically forgetting how to switch functions and navigate.
I would have been pleased as punch to get a refurbished one back, but to be honest, I think I would be a bit jealous of those getting the 6th-gen, which begs the question: how many people will complain, which I don't think they have a right to do; after all, they got their 6-year old Nano replaced, which is almost unheard of. I also wonder about the reverse; will people complain about getting a new one. I'm sure Apple will hear both, but as for me, I'd be pleased either way because this is an unexpected surprise.
