1st Gen Nano Recall Notification

Finally! I got notification from Apple this evening that they will be replacing my 1st gen nano. I had to verify serial number, but other than that they said they will send me packing materials and instructions to send it back and they will send me a replacement. They didn't say what they would replace it with (refurbish 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen...). Anyone have an inkling?

No, my sofa has no covering, but I don't take it jogging or to the gym where it is likely to take a knock.

5 years shouldn't be considered "a long time" for a $350 leisure item. That's just nuts. I can see it if you don't have a family to look after, or if you are a child and your parents buy you a new ipod every Christmas, but for regular folk paying the bills if you pay $350 for something just to play music, it should last you a few years.

well I got email late last night, that my repair has been completed. Checked serial # and it also matches inline with a 6th gen nano. I receive it tomorrow from Fedex(signature required) and its coming from PA. Also indicated warranty would be good until December 18, 2013. Obviously that indicates a new product and not a refurbed 90-day unit as well. I dont want to get my hopes up until i get it in my hands tomorrow, but it could be real cool of Apple for doing this. And I personally welcome a product replacement like this. Hope that helps some people out with more info to go on. Good Luck in your case as well. Merry Christmas!

I sent in my request on Nov 17 and have not yet received the materials to ship in my Nano. Is it really taking this long?

Also...is it true that they are no longer supplying refurbished Gen 1 Nanos? I really wanted to keep the one I had for the novelty. I would prefer not to have the new Gen 6. Is a Gen 1 no longer available? Any way to verify this? Thanks!!

FYI, I sent in my first gen nano mid-November (received by Apple on 11/22).

I finally received notification of replacement on 12/17 and the replacement showed up today. As the serial number hinted at, it is a current (6th generation) 8GB nano, in silver. (My original was black.) Apple's website shows the warranty as expired, but see the text below.

Enclosed with the nano was a letter with the following text:

Dear Apple Customer:

Thank you for participating in the iPod nano (1st generation) Replacement Program. Please find your replacement iPod enclosed.

Serial Number

Please note that your replacement iPod has a serial number different to that of your original iPod nano. In some cases due to limited availability of replacement stock of iPod nano (1st generation) Apple may have replaced your iPod with a more recent iPod model of equivalent or better specification. Always retain a record of your serial number(s) for future reference.

Warranty

Your replacement iPod product is warranted to be free from defects for 90 days from the date of service.

To ensure that your iPod is up to date, download the latest iTunes from Apple's website at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download. Questions regarding the operation of your iPod can be answered at Apple's online support site at http://www.apple.com/support/ipod.

Sincerely,

AppleCare Service

11/12 - registered two white 2GB pods for replacement

11/23 - #1 shipped from germany the the netherlands

11/24 - #2 shipped from germany the the netherlands

12/06 - "Product replacement pending"

Used to have #1 in my hands every day, made it look really "worn" - #2 was really in mint condition, my wife did not really use it and kept it in a case. Would prefer to get a 1st gen again - love the vintage wheel. Best would be one 1st gen and one 6th gen.

Wow, good news. This calls int question my original theory that Apple was likely subcontracting refurbishment, including the remanufacture of new cases. This could still be the case, but now seems unlikely unless the whole process turned out to be more costly than just cutting loose with new Nano's. It also vindicates those who question how Apple could possibly have enough backstock to meet demand.

Frankly, I loved my little 1st-gen. Beautiful design, and felt just right in the hand. I never mastered the clickwheel, though; I found it a bit finicky, but that's more my clumsiness and periodically forgetting how to switch functions and navigate.

I would have been pleased as punch to get a refurbished one back, but to be honest, I think I would be a bit jealous of those getting the 6th-gen, which begs the question: how many people will complain, which I don't think they have a right to do; after all, they got their 6-year old Nano replaced, which is almost unheard of. I also wonder about the reverse; will people complain about getting a new one. I'm sure Apple will hear both, but as for me, I'd be pleased either way because this is an unexpected surprise.

I just got mine back, and it's a sixth-gen. I called to complain, because I liked my first-gen. I'm sure this one's fine, even better, but it's not what I bought or wanted. The Apple Support guy said that somewhere it said that we would receive the equivalent or better, but I don't remember seeing that anywhere. (It does say it on the letter accompanying the replacement; that's a little too late.)

I doubt if I ever would have let them take my first-gen Nano if I'd known I couldn't get it back.
