iOS 5.0.1 Crashing iPhone 3GS

Hi, I own a iPhone 3GS 32 GB, and I just updated to iOS 5.0.1. For some reason, even if my iPhone is on sleep, it keeps rebooting every 2 minutes, regardless of what I am doing. It goes back to the apple logo, reboots, and shows the lock screen. After unlocking it, I can only use it for about 2 minutes everytime. Then the screen goes black. I don't know what's the problem, because iOS 5.0 was working perfectly fine before updating. I updated without connecting it to my computer over wifi. Does anyone else have this problem???

My progress so far:

For those just checking in, there's a significant bug with iOS5 running on the iphone 3GS. My in the 16gb. Ran great on iOS4, runs like **** since the upgrade. Screen goes dark when using apps, even when batter is fully charged. I've been waiting for Apple to help out. Glad I didn't hold my breath. Here's what I've tried so far.

1. Tried that neat little trick from mohammadfromabudhabi -- it seemed to help some people, but not me.

1: Restored from the with most recent settings: no improvement. Screen went dark right away. I've learned using something like "maps," (although pretty much ANY app would do it) pushes is to "go dark."

2: Restored to factory settings. Seemed to help longer. Without any apps, there was nothing to force the crash. Wound up crashing it with full battery power while downloading an app from the app store. So, no good either.

SO. Time to give up on iOS5. Next step: try to figure out how to downgrade to iOS4. iTunes won't be any help here. I'll keep you posted.

I think you're absolutely right. My 3GS is a year and a half old too, and on iOS 4 the battery would give me a full day but once I installed iOS 5, all these problems immediately started. So, it's likely both software and hardware: we're probably experiencing the same battery bug that is affecting iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s users, but because our battery is so much weaker by now it affects our phones a lot more powerfully.

Looks like there's only two solutions:

1) Because there will be a battery fix that is included in iOS 5.1 meant to address the battery life bug in some of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s devices, we can hope that the bug affecting these devices is the same bug affecting ours and that Apple fixes it. In other words, wait for Apple to fix iOS 5 with a software update.

2) Downgrade to iOS 4, which clearly does not take as much of a toll on the battery. Apple does not support this, but there are ways to do it if you look online.

So I ordered the 4s. BUT, if all the probs are related to a weak battery, why not replace it? Looked it up online: seems straight forward. Cracking it open will void the warranty, but mine's already out of warranty. Without a new battery, it's a brick anyway. Battery is $17. Do a good search. Lot's of info on how to do it. Think I will.

Hello,

SOrry to jump into the conversation, but I have an issue.

I have a 3GS and I did an upgrade on IOS 5.0.1 on iTunes (Windows) and at the end I got an error (did not remember the message).

The big problem I have is my iPhone does not start anymore and it just display on the screen to connect to iTunes like the first time I start if after the box. I tried to connect to my PC and starting iTunes, but nothing happens.

Do you please have an idea to help ?

Thanks a lot

Great to hear that a new battery fixed your problem. In my case however, the 3GS was a brand new warranty replacement with (hopefully!) a new battery. Mohammed from Abu Dhabi's fix seems to have permanently fixed the crashing; fingers crossed.

Clearly more than one showstopper bug in the IOS5.0.1 release...

Thanks for all the info goofbear! By far the most helpful I've found..

So anyway, I had a few more questions for you.

1. Were you experiencing these same things? Just to make sure we're having the same issue.

  • restarting every 1-5 minutes
  • not recieving any texts or calls

2. Did the battery replacement solve everything? I really want to try everything else before doing the battery switch, especially if it might not even work.

3. Would jailbreaking/downgrading to an earlier iOS solve the issues?

Thanks again so much for all the help.
