itunes will not allow me to convert my mp3 to aac

I'm interested in converting an mp3 to aac format. however when i choose the song and select Advanced from the tool bar, Convert to AAC is greyed out. Is there perhaps some setting to enable this, or reason it won't allow it?

I've not successfuly done this before, the mp3 does not have any DRM info associated with it. Using windows 7 and iTunes 10.

The issue i was running into was that i hadn't appropriately allowed itunes to add the file to my itunes music library. I was trying to choose this option from my iphone, or from some location. You have to have it added to your Library under Music.
