Thanks for this
So can can I have to restore as a new phone, and not do any back up at all?
How can I not lose all my data settings etc?
You won't loose, your data. Make sure you make a back up before restore. Don't restore the back up just Sync all your data from your computer itunes. All your music and app, will be sync to your phone. I did this and I din't loose anything, I can't guarantee that you wouldn't loose any data but at least it works for me. I have all my music and apps on myphone and the annoying red dot gone for ever. If you find out that you loose any data you can restore your back up any time, but the red icon from **** will show again. Hope this help
I have same problem on my ipad2 it shows 1 notification appearing in settings called apple told ro restore reset etc and still there
Make sure your restore it as a new iphone. Remember to back up just in case. Don't restore your backup. Just sync all your data from itunes.
This is to indicate that you have a software update (iOS 5.0.1) waiting to be downloaded and installed on your iPhone/iOS device. Launch Settings App > General > Software Update and download the update.
Once you do that, the red notification icon will go away. No need to restore the phone for this.
Cheers.
Mechies post isn't correct either. My software is already up to date. (iOS 5.0.1) I have performed a hard reset by erasing all content and settings and let it sync with Itunes again to get all my data back but the annoying red 1 always returns to the "settings" icon.
Isn't there someone out there with an answer???
Is it only Sprint 4S phones doing this?
Gordon
Ahh. Gotcha. No idea in that case. Just ignore it may be in the meanwhile? 😕
It is not only Sprint phones because I have the 3GS and as soon as I downloaded the new software presto, red dot with the number 1. If you figure out the fix please post it. The stupid little red circle is annoying!!! Wondering why Apple is not posting anything to help????
Same here sort of. I bought 2 iPhone 4s'. One 32Gb and one 64 Gb. Did the same procedure on both like everyone else to upgrade to 5.0.1 but only the 32Gb has the "Red 1" on the settings. The 64Gb is fine. Crazy.
Same here. 16 gig Verizon iPhone 4S. Having to restore the phone to get rid of the badge is ridiculous. It's time for Apple to step up.
Hi guys,
Hopefully this info. will help some of you. In regards to iOS5, if you are un-jailbroken all you need to do is update to the latest software release (5.1) through iTunes and the badge should disappear.

Wow..
Restore your devices, backing up (should be part of your sync) before doing so. At this point, you'll be restored to 5.1; you can't get to earlier versions. Make sure you restore from a backup to not lose data.
I went to apple via phone and instore and the only solution they had was to restore the phone. However, I was a little nervous to do that and decided to leave it till the next update. Well last week they had a new update and from everyones posts and information I noticed that alot of people did the last update via wifi. So I decided to plug the phone in and do it threw the computer. Well after the new update was completed my little red badge is gone, so no need to restore before you try this.
Make sure your device has its own unique name and not the name of your old iOS device you replaced.
Okay so I was able to fix it. I was reset all setting which deletes everything and then I restored for my iCloud backup.
The icon is gone and I can stop being annoyed by it. Granted depending on how much data you have in your device it will take some time to restore it.
