5.0.1 email image cache problems

I have two different email accounts that I check on my iPhone 4 with the 5.0.1 update. One is a Google account. The other is a private account. I receive images from a remote security system at a warehouse I monitor when motion is triggered. The device sends 3 images to both accounts. When I open my email on my Mac laptop or desktop, I can see the current images just fine, but whenI view them on my iPhone, it sends what appears to be an old cached version of the image on both accounts. If I compare the emails on the computer, timestamps, image numbers, etc., it is obvious that my desktop and laptop are working correctly, but the iPhone email accounts are not displaying the images correctly. When I view on the iPhone with the new update, I get a reating old image no matter how many times the alarm is triggered. It is like the image was an old cache version from days ago set on a loop that it cannot get past. I experienced NO problems prior to the update. Any suggestions on how to clear the cache on iPhone email if there is such a thing?

I believe Apple has taken the stand similar to Microsoft based upon the conversation I had with Apple's tech support and that is the responsibility lies with the developers of third party software/products to amend their products as needed to work with Apple's software/products. I can't speak to the rest of the software problems from the recent Mail update which appears to be growing, just mine. Usually Apple fixes bugs in their software fairly quickly. Since this issue was pushed up two levels to Apple's Engineers, I know at the very least they are aware of the issue and have a good idea of where the problem is. From what I was told by Apple is that the metadata is handled differently to conform to new standards and that the old method for handling metadata was no longer accepted and needed updating by third party manufacturers.

I can understand Apple's push. The migration from O'S 9 to OS X was handled similarly. Their was a brief time apps could run on legacy code, but Apple had to cut the cord to get third party developers to move forward and update their software.

Again, as a consumer it is frustrating, but I understand the logical step to push others to conform.

In the event this isn't a push for developers to update legacy code, I'm sure Apple will put out a fix. I do know from my conversations with the Apple engineers that access to the discussion boards is restricted and they are not able to view these posts. So the only way to force a change is if you have AppleCare or are still under the warranty of your Apple product and keep raising this as an issue.

I know I would be happier.

If you get a good support person, their supervisor can gain access to links on the discussion boards. Just give them the reference number. The more times people site this as a problem and ongoing frustration, someone will have to listen. One way or another.

I opened a ticket with q-see at the beginning of December and this was the reply:

"A change that apple made in OS5 is preventing the firmware from working correctly.

The factory is aware of this issue and is working on it."

They then closed the ticket and marked it as solved. I'm going to reopen the ticket and ask that it not be marked as relsolved until it actually is. The more people who open tickets with them the more press this issue will get.

I've been having the same issue and I also have q-see. I created a Gmail account and it was working fine, but I noticed the emails weren't coming in immediately (PUSH), it was set up as "Fetch" and it didn't have a "Push" option. So then I tried to go around it by using Gmail under Microsoft Exchange which does send them "Push", but now I don't get the pictures.

I found a new firmware update on the Q-See site for my QT428. The update is 3.1.9 and when I installed it my problem with the iphone and ipad was solved.

Firmware version 3.1.9 for QT428, QT454 and QT504

This Version has the following fix and new features:

  1. 1. Supports mac 10.7 and Safari 5.1
  2. 2. Fixes email alert on iphone iOS5
  3. 3. Adds PIP option in the main monitor connected to the DVR
  4. 4. Adds option to view live camera or not when the User logs out (in the Basic setting)
  5. 5. Adds an option to Edit Video in the Playback (cut the video and back up cut part only)
  6. 6. Keeps the previous configuration after the firmware upgrade.
  7. 7. Adds a Quick Playback from 2 or 5 or 10 minutes ago with just one click.
  8. 8. IP address will be shown the same in the Network Menu and in the Information.

It is also available for other models. Go to Q-See support and search for your model. I also see a new server setup under network but I can not find what it is for.

Interesting, Since upgrading firmware, I am unable to view images sent to my gmail account on both blackberry OS 7 and IOS5, I get a message saying the attachment is empty and cannot be downloaded. However, when I send it to my BES account on my blackberry they show up fine. Also images show up fine in gmail web app. I'm sending from a gmail account and my system is a QT-528. I'm wondering if there is a little difference between the 528 and 428. Firmware is QT528-526v319fw.zip. Anyone else have the QT528 and tried the new firmware? I'd be interested to see if it is working as expected.

Steve,

I am having the exact same problem using Netbotz 500 system...I almost though the unit was bad but I tracked the problem down to my iPad (for some reason, it does not happen on my iPhone 5.01.). All other computers display the proper (recent) images, but the iPad 2 using 5.0.1 does not.

The only time I can get it to do so is if I shut it down and restart it and them trigger an alert that sends pictures. It will work for that first time.

I await a fix in the meantime...

I had this same problem with emails that my company was sending out every time a purchase was made. I don't have any of the emails you guys/girls are talking about from the other companies (ie Q-See), so I can't speak to them specifically. However, to fix this issue for my company, I had to change the "Content-ID" of the embedded image to something globally unique, and then my iPhone started recognizing that the images we indeed different.

There are a lot of tutorials on embedding images within an html email. And nearly all of the tutorials used "image1" as the Content-ID of the embedded image. When the iphone email app sees "Content-ID = <image1>" for an embedded image in two emails, it thinks they're the same image, so it displays the cached version of the image. Unfortunately none of the tutorials stated that the Content-ID had to be globally unique, so most people think it just has to be unique to the email.

Hope this helps.

Larry
