I would like to know if you are charged for messages sent through imessage if you are no on a wifi connection. I believe the answer is no but have omeone telling me you will be charged if you are on 3g. Also, I have been told that the imessages use data from your plan. Can anyone confirm or deny?

That makes no sense whatsoever. iMessage is designed to work with both phone numbers and Apple IDs.
This is not true at all. I have a Verizon iPhone and have never been charged for iMessages sent to another iPhone, regardless of carrier.
Meg, check your bill. I have only used iMessage for the last month and, according to MyVerizon app, I have used 843 texts. If I choose "detail," it shows them as "Mobile to Mobile" texts. How else do you explain why these are noted here and show up on my Verizon bill. Maybe you use a different billing center / system than I do, but I have no reason not to be truthful about this.
I have changed the desitination of the receiver to their Apple ID as it was going to their VZW phone number. I'll let you know if it continues to up the counter as it has.
And, of course if you're not using it the way I was (sending to another Verizon customer, addressing the message to their mobile phone number) you may not have been billed.
Yup, I only send using phone numbers and no, I've never been billed except when iMessage has failed. On rare occasions, the message goes out as iMessage (shows blue bubble), fails and then gets sent as an SMS. The bubble turns green and there is a legend underneath that it was then sent as SMS.
Guys!!! use AppleID in iMessage instead of your phone number. I was charged by Verizon bc if you use your number you will be charged if the other person uses another carrier, such as AT&T. Once I transferred to use my appleID there were no more charges 😀
Think about iMessage like Whatsapp or Touch App, they are routed through your Data plan, Meaning no additional charges unless you already max out your montly qoute.
Nonsense. I constantly message people on other carriers from my phone number and have never been charged for iMessages to them.

If the other person is on a phone other than an iPhone, the message will be sent as a standard SMS/MMS messages and any charges per your cell plan will apply.
Does that money go to Apple or to the carrier.If I switch on/off the sevice 5 times in a day, I am charged 5 times for it! This is very vague.
