So many problems with iTunes Match...

So far my experience with iTunes Match has been horrible. I keep getting a ton of unmatched songs that absolutely should be matched, and lots of upload errors.

For example, the album "Houses of the Holy" by Led Zeppelin.... http://i.imgur.com/RscRg.png

After toying around with it for a while, i found that sometimes using iTunes to create an AAC version of a unmatched song, the newly created AAC version does get matched. Not sure why this is, as the original unmatched files are 320bit MP3s.

Another issue I've found is that albums are not sorting correctly on my iPhone with iTunes Match active. I use dougscripts in iTunes to copy the release year of all my albums into the "sort album" meta data field. So that way on my ipod or iphone albums are sorted chronologically. Through iTunes match, none of my albums are being sorted correctly. Its not even that they're sorted alphabetically instead of chronologically. They're just listen in what seems like a completely random order.

Yet another MAAAJJJOOORRR complaint is with the album art. I am very meticulous about my album art. Every album in my library has album art displayed. My first step in getting album art is trying to get album art through iTunes. Most of the time this works fine. For the ones that dont, I just search google images and copy and paste the album art in... What I'm finding though, is that all my albums with album art gotten through iTunes, is not showing up on my iPhone when using iTunes Match. But albums where I had to paste a image in to iTunes, those do show up on my iPhone. This is not 100% consistent, but pretty close.

Overall I am very disappointed with iTunes Match so far. The Apple philosophy of "it just works" certainly does not apply to this product.

Im going to wait it out another couple of days or a week or so, and if things don't get better, I'll be calling in asking for a refund.

I fixed this problem, but why the fix worked is a mystery.

I deleted the new CD from my library through iTunes, saying yes to all the prompts asking me if I wanted to delete from the library, delete the files, and delete from iCloud.

I made a new temporary library following the steps I showed you on page 41. Then I ripped the CD to my new library (Match turned off obviously) and sorted-out the album art.

I quit iTunes and re-opened it, this time pointing it back to my real library, again as I explained on page 41.

Making sure Preferences had the option checked to copy all new files to the media folder when adding to the library, I chose 'File > Add to Library' and pointed it towards the ripped CD in my temporary library.

After the CD imported, I chose 'Store > Update iTunes Match' and let it get on with it.

Half hour later it had finished, and this time all the tracks were properly matched.

Finally I deleted the temporary library.

I do not kow why this worked yet a straight import from the CD to my real library didn't work (several times).

Cancelled iTunes Match. Still using iTunes, though, for all my local music. Cancelled subscription to Rhapsody, which isn't keeping up in the streaming music world. Subscribed to Spotify, which streams at 320kbps in the Premium subscription @ $9.99/month (same price as Rhapsody Premium, which streams to desktop at 128kbps mp3). When I cancelled my iTunes Match subscription, the Apple support person wrote back, "I completely understand the situation." Exact words. I asked for a pro-rated refund since, as I told them, "iTunes Match doesn't work any more." I quickly received the pro-rated refund. Headaches gone. All is well. RIP iTunes Match. I hardly knew ye.

I have used iTunes Match for as long as it has been available in the UK. With the last few CDs I have imported it has a) struggled to match the artwork even though they are fairly mainstream CDs and b) struggled to match them with any music in the store (when the store definitely has the album), it therefore takes ages to make up its mind and has to upload them as opposed to match them, which takes ages and takes up storage space. Can't they just fix it??

iTunes Match works really well for music purchased from the iTunes store but I'm not exactly sure that's what it's for. I believe iCloud takes care of that. Even though it's completely insane, I have learned to live with having to turn iTunes Match off and on in order to get a cd to match but what I have a much harder time with is the often inferior track downloads to other devices. Uploaded cd's aren't matching to their equivalent in the iTunes store (no matter what they say) as I believe was supposed to be the case (I've tested this by purchasing the equivalent). Very poor sound quality and massive volume fluctuation are my biggest gripes. The way some tracks match and others are uploaded from the same cd is also problematic. I know these are some of the same complaints that have been making the rounds since day one but it's amazing to me that apparently NOTHING has ever been done about it. I'm getting the feeling that iTunes match will soon be following the path of MobileMe (which I also subscribed to). I will definitely be following that path as there is no way I'll pay for this neglected service again. Two years is enough.

BTW, speaking of The Beach Boys from earlier posts, and as an example, the "matched" download of the Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary Edition (Capitol, 2006) is particularly appalling for all of the reasons described above.

I had itunes match a year ago. I really enjoyed the service and didn't mind it giving me trouble once in a while. The thing I did mind was it messing up my libabry in itunes. I am a tech guy so I understand how stuff works and I know it wasn't me. I would change the name of a song and everything seemed ok but changes would revert back. I canceled the subscription! Lately I have been thinking about starting it back up again. Plus I am interested in commercial free itunes radio. I called apple to find out if my library is still available. They said they hold it for a month after the subscription expires. This is good news because I made so many changes to my library over the past year I was afraid if I turn it back on everything (including playlists) would go back to the original state when I turned match off a year ago. I told the apple rep I loved the service but turned it off because "I felt like I was constantly fighting for control of my itunes library" and the rep gave me a giggle type laugh on the phone. It sounded like he agreed with me. Come on Apple and get with the program! I want to use itunes match but I am too afraid to turn it on. I finally have my itunes library perfect! And I don't want to mess it up.

@Roth, based on my experience, that of others, and my perception of Apple having morphed their Podcast app to what you refer to as something that "...was constantly fighting for control of my (podcast) itunes library," I would be most wary of going back to iTunes Match. Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave. I don't know, maybe this nonsense started when he was here. It does appear that Apple has done one, or both, of two things: 1) completely screwed up iTunes Match and the Podcast app by over-engineering them so they don't allow users to have any control whatsoever 2) given up on iTunes Match and the Podcast app to the point of user-be-******-we've-moved-beyond-caring-about-these-programs-and-their-users, or possibly 3) both. Apple software support has always been less than good. I think they produce good hardware and that's it except perhaps for OS X. Apple is an enigma, no?

I had the same thing. I added iTunes Match thinking it would be a great way to store my music, so I can share it between my computers and update my iPhone list when I needed to, but after I turned it on, then tried turning it off, all of my music, with the exception of things I bought on iTunes was gone. Now I am having trouble getting my main computer to even recognize my phone to reload my music. I am hating iTunes Match so far!!! I guess I should have just paid for more cloud storage for backup!!! Want to cancel and it's only been 2 days now!!!

I just purchased a 5s. Previously I had a 4s. After restoring all my apps were installed in my new phone from iTunes on my Mini. However it installed all the apps I'd ever installed over the last 2 1/2 years that I owned my 4s. Filled the phone and I had to spend an hour deleting about 100 apps. Mostly silly ones my daughter had installed. Now my music. It didn't transfer any of my music even though it all was in my library. It listed it with a cloud symbol even though itunes match wasn't enabled. Now what I'd really like to do it delete all those cloud symbols from my phone. They're really confusing. I swipe and nothing happens. Do I have to delete 500 empty cloud symbols? Am I missing something?

It seems absurd that Apple wants me to download a song...again...that I bought 10 years ago when it's still in my library and I've taken great pains to back it up myself. Personally I don't trust cloud storage for anything important or has value (cost money). It only has be lost once by a server somewhere in the world and then it's gone. I'm much more comfortable with linking to storage of my own.

Sometimes Apple gets things right and sometimes they figure out what they think should be the workflow and they implement it even if they really should keep what's simple...simple.

Final Cut Pro X, Aperture, iMovie and iPhoto are good examples of programs that had good workflows until Apple over-thought themselves into a clumsy but eye-catching app.

Settings > Music and turn off Show all music.

Apple doesn’t care if you download it again or not.

But you purchased it and it is available to redownload or just stream without downloading.

If I turn off Show all music won't it not show my music that IS on the iphone?

Apple's counter-intuitive choices again like deselecting "documents" in OSX preferences>icloud and you get asked if you want to delete the files in the cloud. Who would want to do that? Maybe I just don't want to sync from this computer it's documents but other documents I want to remain in the cloud. iCloud Drive seems better. Like iDisk was...I think unttil the "simplifiers" at Apple mess it up.

My rant

No. With this option On, it shows purchased music in the cloud (hence the cloud icon) and not actually on the iPhone.

Yes, it should be named something different (iTunes purchases not on iPhone?) to correctly identify what it does.

That's not what it states or what it does.

The items will be deleted from your Mac (as it states) and will still be in iCloud for other devices.
