Q: iTunes Match vs. Play Counts

Hello everyone - I need some help.

I signed up for Match last night, and it matched/uploaded just about all of my music. I've been messing with it today trying to figure out how it works, and ran into an error that I can't figure out - play counts.

I downloaded a new album (CAMP by Childish Gambino, if you're wondering), imported it into iTunes, uploaded it to iCloud/Match, and it was listed as "Matched." The album showed up on my iPhone and my iPad. Perfect!

I listened to it a few times on my phone, rated a few songs, etc, then opened up iTunes to see what it did. It pulled down the ratings from the cloud, but not the play counts. I plugged my phone in and synced (wifi sync wasn't connecting due to an unknown error) in hopes that an itunes sync would pull the play counts down, but no luck...

Anyone else tried this or have a similar experience? I have a few playlists built around play counts and would really like to have my play counts updated. Thanks!

Seems to worse than before...still getting 'last played' dates with no playcount against it?!

Yeah, same for me. This is the one bug that is really keeping me from using iTM full time.

Yeah, seems to be getting worse for me too. I've had it actually mess with my iTunes database by REMOVING play counts.

Apple better be aware of this; I haven't heard of it actually working for ANYONE. It's a 100% reproducable bug.

I've switched to Rdio and sworn off buying music from iTunes until this is fixed.

put me in the problem solved column, finally. However, like many have mentioned, playcount updates are no longer immediate. It has taken iTunes as long as 5 or 6 days to finally tally the playcounts on my iPhone and increment the total playcount in iTunes. this isn't perfect, but i'll take it; at least my plays are no longer being ignored or wasted when i play music on my iPhone. now that the weather is warmer i will be outdoors more, listening to music on my iPhone; at least i can be confident that eventually, my playcounts will sync over. iTunes match is by no means perfect but with this workaround, it's as close to perfect as i need, for now.

Let me join those who think ITunes Match would be awesome if Last Played was updated in the cloud when songs are played on a device. As it stands now, the service is not that useful.

I've seen the batch update happen once or twice, but right now I have been waiting a couple of days for songs to be updated.

Here's another odd thing I have seen recently:I have two playlists - one is called 'Recently Played' which contains songs whose Last Played date is within the last five days, and another called 'Scarcely Played' that has songs whose Last Played date is six or more months ago. When songs finish playing on the device, they are ending up in the 'Scarcely Played' list and not the 'Recently Played' list. What's even stranger is that when I enabled iTunes Match on another device, the 'Scarcely Played' list from the first device was duplicated on the second. Obviously the content of the list is winding up in the cloud and being propagated to devices that don't know any better. On PCs this list was empty as it should be.

Wow, the problem seems to only get worse. I can update the play count in iTunes and within minutes it will show as 0 plays. There is a song I recently purchased from iTunes. Have probably played it 15 times between my Mac, 2 iPods, and iPhone. It shows 0 plays! After 5 months, it is embarassing that this problem is so screwed up. I turned of Match on all mobile devices. Have turned off and back on on my Mac. Nothing helps. Very annoying. Some songs I imported into iTunes 10 years ago and all the play counts are totally wrong. Also, sometimes I will have an album where I've listened to every song about the same number of times, but a few songs list wildly inflated numbers of plays, such as 20-30 more than the rest!

Seems to be working now for me. Last couple of days it would take some time to update but now I notice it's faster. I was listening to a few songs on the way to work (around 9:15), when I got in to work and checked now around 10:00 it shows the last played.

    Hopefully it sticks

As far as I can see now the playcount and last played information get synchronized as long as you're using computers (Mac/Windows) and iTunes. All plays from mobile devices (iOS) like iPhone/iPad/Apple TV DON'T get synced.... very bad!

Play counts and last played do update from iDevices and Apple TV but it can take a couple of days or more to filter back to iTunes. It can be a little frustrating if, like me, you depend on this data.

I have recently turned Match back on and have been keeping track of what is going on and, for the moment, it seems to be working for me. I have my main library on a MacMini, have a secondary library on a MacBook (with nothing actually downloaded) and have an iPhone 4S and an Apple TV set up with it, too.

It seems to me that play counts have been reliably pushed for everything I have played on both my Apple TV and my iPhones and that these are 'sticking'. I had the same problem of play counts vanishing after a few days but, at least for me it seems to be okay now. It can take a day or two for last played dates and play counts to come through but they all seem to get there in the end. Evidently if you want it to happen immediately then it isn't going to work for you, but if you're happy for it to 'catch up in the end' then my experience seems to indicate that you should be okay.

It would be interesting to know other people's experiences!

No change here. I turned off iTunes Match some days ago. Yesterday I tried to turn it on again: almost every counts for one month ago were gone.

I turned it off again, and put back iTunes Library files that were saved before I turned iTunes Match on.

    Still waiting for a fix.

Works OK on computer for me. I never turned it off. I turned iTunes match back on my iPhone 4S las week after a couple month hiatus and play counts are correct but most of my last played dates have been erased!!

I have similar problems. My play counts never get reset to zero, but for some reason last time i synced my iPod, some play counts were decreased but not others. Also what is interesting is that only play counts are affected, the last played dates seem to be updated correctly...

I have it partially working at the moment. But, I have to manually perform a "Store -> Update iTunes Match" on my iMac before accessing the iPad or MacBook. If I don't, then playcount and last played date get overwritten on the iMac. I would love it if this worked as advertised.
