WHEW!

thank goodness I read this discussion forum before I sent in my immaculate 4g 1st gen nano as part of Apple's replacement program!

the FedEx envelope was on my desk when I learned that I would NOT be getting a 1st gen nano as the replacement. that would have been a bummer, as I despise the 6th gen nano design and assumed -- like many others -- that I would be getting a refurb 1st gen as a replacement.

it is a shame that Apple did not give the 1st gen nano owners the option of choosing which nano they would prefer as a replacement, because the folks in this forum seem split 50/50 between 1st gen and 6th gen fans.

unfortunately, I already removed my old nano's protective covers from both the front and back to ship it, so I will have to find another way to protect it now.

an early post from a 1st gen owner (page one of discussion) said he had recently replaced the battery in his nano -- I'd prefer to spend $100 on a battery rather than buying new peripherals for my little player, which I just love.

congratulations to those who are enjoying their replacement 6th gen nano;

condolences to those who wanted another 1st gen;

and to those rarified few who did get a replacement 1st gen -- I'm green with envy!

Quick update. I had one shipped back on 12/22 but we weren't here and fedex left three notices before sending it back to the fulfillment center.

Anyway, got an email from apple which said "we need an address where you will be for signatur" which I provided.

No shipping notification, but this AM fedex just dropped it at the door. No signature required. Funny.

6GB silver, 7.2GB capacity. :-(

After getting the 6G replacement, and still being very upset about having sent them my 1G, I bought a refurbished black 1G that was in really beautiful condition (physically, anyway... and it seems to work fine so far) on eBay for $47. It is 4Gb and my old one was only 2Gb, so that's a good thing, but -- just out of curiosity, since obviously there is NO WAY I am sending it back to Apple -- I entered the serial number in on the replacement web page and, sure enough, this one is also eligible for replacement. Since it is refurbished, it MAY have had the bad battery replaced... but I am definitely keeping it regardless. I was almost as excited to have this one arrive in the mail today as I was when I bought my original one way back when! A beautiful piece of electronics...

I'm glad some people who wanted to keep their 1Gs were smart enough to wait for definitive info on what the replacement was. I'm reasonably satisfied since I spent $47 to double the storage on a 1G and got the 6G for free, but if I had kept my old one I would know that it was well cared for. Who knows how long this replacement one will last...

Just keep in mind that without knowing who did the refurbish and whether they changed the battery you could have a device that will catch fire. If it is in your house when it does, and you are not, Apple is in no way going to be responsible for any damage since you are aware of the exchange program and have used it and your insurance may use this fact to void any fire coverage on your part by claiming that you were negligent.

Seems like a lot of risk for a 5 year old device.
