Invalid SIM Card on iPhone 4S (5.0.1)

Seems to be a widespread problem, from what I'm seeing in the discussions:

I have an unlocked iPhone 4S (bought in France) and use it with Vodafone in Portugal. I was using the same SIM card that worked perfectly fine for over a year on my previous iPhone 4, and it also worked just fine in the 4S... until I updated to iOS 5.0.1.

The very next day I started having connections issues and invalid SIM card errors - requiring a reboot to temporarily fix it for a few minutes, until it lost connection again - the iPhone would still show it had a few bars strength, but was actually unable to make calls or use data. After a while it would go back to invalid sim message.

I replaced my old SIM card, and I though that was it... It was working fine.. until after 3 or 4 days, I find once again that I had a Invalid SIM message.

I've read reports suggesting that this might actually have to do with using other chargers than the official Apple 4S one - it sound kind of crazy, but just in case, I was also using a 3rd party charger when those issues arised for the first time. Anyway, I was now using my previous official iPhone 4 charger when I got the new error with the new SIM card.

Also, although the iPhone recommends using a non-locked SIM Card, mine has always had a PIN, and always worked through activations without a problem.

Other than being a real hardware problem with my new iPhone 4S (crossing my fingers it isn't!) my guess is that this is a software related incident - as this has just popped up after upgrading to iOS 5.0.1, and it would have been an amazing coincidence for SIM cards to go bust, or for the iPhone 4S to suddenly malfunction, afterwards.

Hope you guys can fix it soon, as well as the phone numbers not showing up the callers name in the contacts (that was a problem I was having from the very beginning, with iOS 5.0.0).

Just to keep you informed, and as suspected... my new and Apple-"officially approved" microSIM worked fine for about a month, but now is becoming prone to the same increasingly Invalid SIM errors I first had.

Fine for a month, then a Invalid SIM error last week... then everything fine again but with increasing data network dropouts; then 2 days ago another Invalid SIM.... then yesterday again... and I can see where this is going again. Soon I'll be having Invalid SIM errors multiple times a day, and having to reboot each time.

I really hope the 5.1 update fixes all these issues, and that Apple deploys it in the next couple of weeks at most!

Something i have noticed.

As i mentioned with the original o2 microSIM card everything worked fine, trouble started when i changed to Telenor microSIM. Although after software update it worked for a while, but i have noticed something. The mircoSIM card is not exactly the same... Somewhere in a forum i read that on someone somewhere had trouble with iphone 4: the microSIM card had a contact with the metal card tray. I wonder if that contact can make a short circuit that could explain some of these troubles (invalid SIM, battery drainage), but certainly i am sure that the first sim card contact area is a bit further away from card tray than the second one.

Hi,

The Provider changed the SIM card and now the phone is working since almost two days without a problem. Interestingly the card i received was a normal SIM that was cut to be a micro one in the shop. I just wonder about the following. There is a seemingly wide spread problem with a very expensive product. And the company does not say anything, but lets people "struggle". If they know about it than they are invaluable not to use more severe terms... If they did not than they are simple amateurs. They had several weeks if not months to react. For almost 800EUR, the owner is always right. And needs to be satisfied without hesitation. I feel like Michael Douglas in the movie Falling Down in the McDonalds sciene...

It is very strange the invalid sim error, here is how I have fix it.

When the iphone 4S was released I buy two unlocked phones, in one of them I got the invalid sim error issue, as you remember the iphone 4S have installed IOS 5, the fix for this issue was to go and replace the micro SIM with a new one, after I do this I have never a problem with that phone.

The second iphone 4S that I buy never have a issue, it was shipped in the same day as the first one that has the invalid sim error and was fixed by replacing the sim with a new one.

I have also buy a third iphone 4S that is not unlocked, this iphone worked without issues until I updated to IOS 5.0.1, after I update it to this version constantly I receive the invalid sim error and I have to turn it off and on to get signal for some time.

I read a post in redmondpie ( http://www.redmondpie.com/fix-invalid-sim-or-no-sim-card-installed-error-on-ipho ne-4s-with-the-new-ios-5.0.1-build-9a406/ ) that has some solution, after I do all the steps and I be sure that I have the new updated version only to the restore iphones the issue was solved.

Here are the steps you need to do:

---------------------------------------------------------------

Apple goes on to describe the recommended solution for the issue, which involves backing up and then restoring the device, an action that involves iTunes pulling down the new Build 9A406 of iOS 5.0.1 and installing it on the user’s device. Once the device has been restored, the user can then restore their content and settings from the backup they made earlier.

1. Back up your user content and settings using iTunes or iCloud.
2. Restore your iPhone 4S using iTunes.
3. After the process is complete, restore your user content and settings from your backup.
4. To confirm that you’ve successfully restored, verify that the version is now iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) in Settings > General > About.

After testing and having 3 iphones 4S I could say that this issue is related to something inside the software of the iphone that blocks the SIM and you receive the invalid sim error.

The third iphone that I updated to IOS 5.0.1 was done directly from the iphone not using itunes, maybe this is why I got the invalid sim error.

Maybe it is better to update the iphone using itunes instead of doing it directly on the iphone, if you do it directly from the iphone the file is only 50MB and if you do it thru itunes the file is over 800MB, there is a big difference and maybe it has more things to avoid this type of issues.

If you have an iphone 4S with this issue try to follow the steps to get version 5.0.1 ( 9A406 ), if that don't fix the issue go to your carrier and ask for a new micro sim.

Thanks for trying to help, but like aaron said... Most of us already tried that, and it didn't help at all.

To make matters worst, even using new SIMs that seem to work might be tricky. My 3rd or 4th "new" SIM did seem to work, and I was guaranteed it was an Apple-aproved one. But after about 1 month, the dreaded Invalid SIM began to show up again, and with increasingly frequency... just like before.

Oue best hope is that this really gets fixed in the 5.1 update, as most people seem to be having good results with it (I just hope that it doesn't postpone the issue for another 30 days!)

Guys and Girls,

I have the SIM replaced two days ago and everything is fine till now. The funny thing is that this SIM was cut out of a normal one, and the one i had before was an "original microSIM". But i tell you something: in case this invalid SIM problem comes back, i will buy a ticket fly to Cupertino and kick the *** of them. This is my first Apple product and so many people told me about how great and anyway better any Apple products compared to their competitors. Well i can tell you the only thing that attracted me is the design. iTunes was "good" enough to prove me i do not want any Apple software anymore. I would pick up the design department and have them work for me. Well i do understand that computer systems are complicated, but not trying to help people with some information for months, is not acceptable. Either you make a good working product or you stay in your headquarter and not try to sell something less than working. Sorry Mr. CEO and CFO, financial plans are not my business. I am customer who is ALWAYS right!

I got my iPhone4S as a Christmas gift. It worked beautifully until this past Saturday Feb. 4 2012 when it began having the "Invalid SIM"/"No SIM" message. It was both bought and activated at the same AT&T store. It has not been hacked EVER by myself or (to my knowledge) anyone else as it has only been in my possession. I have used only the charger cable and adapter that came in the box. I have not tampered with, removed, or replaced my SIM card or SIM tray. The error happens 2-5 times per day - even when I restore it with the iTunes function, which I have done every day since it first happened. I hope this gets fixed soon because I have no use for an iPhone with this kind of issue. My iPad2 has a bigger screen and 3G that doesn't fail.

At least the error message changes every couple times I restore. Invalid SIM, No SIM, SIM Error. This is upsetting. Restoring, no longer works. If I wanted an Ipod Touch, I would've gotten one. You'd think that Apple would have cleared this issue up, seeing as this thread/problem seem to have been going on for 3 months, but they haven't. Steve Jobs wouldn't tolerate this. I've been with Apple since the II GS, but they are ruining all the brand capital that has been built up over the last couple of decades. PLEASE FIX THIS!!! Sad in Brooklyn.

PS. How are the Droids? Heard the battery life is an issue, but if I can call or check email its a win!!!
