Invalid SIM Card on iPhone 4S (5.0.1)

Seems to be a widespread problem, from what I'm seeing in the discussions:

I have an unlocked iPhone 4S (bought in France) and use it with Vodafone in Portugal. I was using the same SIM card that worked perfectly fine for over a year on my previous iPhone 4, and it also worked just fine in the 4S... until I updated to iOS 5.0.1.

The very next day I started having connections issues and invalid SIM card errors - requiring a reboot to temporarily fix it for a few minutes, until it lost connection again - the iPhone would still show it had a few bars strength, but was actually unable to make calls or use data. After a while it would go back to invalid sim message.

I replaced my old SIM card, and I though that was it... It was working fine.. until after 3 or 4 days, I find once again that I had a Invalid SIM message.

I've read reports suggesting that this might actually have to do with using other chargers than the official Apple 4S one - it sound kind of crazy, but just in case, I was also using a 3rd party charger when those issues arised for the first time. Anyway, I was now using my previous official iPhone 4 charger when I got the new error with the new SIM card.

Also, although the iPhone recommends using a non-locked SIM Card, mine has always had a PIN, and always worked through activations without a problem.

Other than being a real hardware problem with my new iPhone 4S (crossing my fingers it isn't!) my guess is that this is a software related incident - as this has just popped up after upgrading to iOS 5.0.1, and it would have been an amazing coincidence for SIM cards to go bust, or for the iPhone 4S to suddenly malfunction, afterwards.

Hope you guys can fix it soon, as well as the phone numbers not showing up the callers name in the contacts (that was a problem I was having from the very beginning, with iOS 5.0.0).

I've contacted Apple, and since my Phone is under warranty, they replaced it with a new iPhone 4S. What I liked about it, that it has iOS 5.0.

In my previous iPhone, it was 5.0 and never had issues till I updated to 5.0.1.

I'm using this new iPhoen for 2 days now and never got any issues of 'No Service' nor 'Invalid SIM'. So I will keep my phone on 5.0 and won't update, till we see how 5.1 final works 😉

Happens all the time to my 32gb white 4s (vodafone uk). And it seems to be happening with more regularity, like about 10+ times a day.

I've tried restoring from back-up and all that but it only worked for about 48hrs.

I'm seeing that replacing the phone / sim card isn't helping anyone either, unless anyone here has heard to the contrary?

anyone know if apple are planning on solving the problem with an update / new model sim card or sim tray or new whatever is causing the failure?

Hi

I've the same issue ! My SIM works fine for two months, then the invalid SIM error comes up. At the moment, many times a day it will be happend.

I upgraded the iPhone 4s to 5.0.1 9A406 but it not solved the issue. The remove of the sim PIN not help and at last factory reset also.

In the moment my iPhone is to minum configuration but it consum power, at the end of the day it is empty.

Janba,

it is nothing to do with the sim security. if it is a security it must not start or work at all. but the sim starts working after every trial or reboot. may be after 2hrs or 3hrs of inactivity you find the surprise. once you reboot it agaian starts working. the same sim would work fantastic in ip4 but not in ip4S. it clearly says the problem is only in ip4S. i am also waiting for apple to come out with some solution.

iOS firmware contains 2 parts (firmware, baseband), firmware is the main OS itself, baseband is the software for the GSM or sim ...

if you have the SHSH for your device for iOS 5.0, then you can downgrade, but that will only impact the firmware... and it's impossible to downgrade iPhone 4(S) baseband, and I guess the issue here is not the firmware, it's the baseband of iOS 5.0.1.

In other words, even if you could downgrade to 5.0, you still have 5.0.1 baseband, so the issue will remain.

Here the same SIM problem.

I've got iPhone 4S since November 2011. Everything right until January 2012. Symptomes: Every day in the morning the message "Invalid SIM". After restart all OK. In the end of the month I got several messages a day: "no sim installed", "Without network". Other times the network indicator was strong but in real i was nor connect to the network. I've changed the micro-SIM 2 times but nothing was solved. I went to the operator that sold me the iphone, in Portugal, and now i'm waiting for a "repair" or a new iphone. Meanwile i have to wait 2 or 3 weeks.

It's impressive that the called by apple "the best iphone ever" has this problem for so many time unsolved. This is an high-end phone. It should not have ... a SIM problem....... Plese Apple, shame on you. Solve the problem.

Go to apple shop. Before you go save all data( mms, SMS etc) let them wipe phone they also put latest ver they have on. Then when you get phone back go get new sim. Put it in, reset network settings. Make sure with telco that sim is active before reset net settings. So far so good. Time will tell... Oh my new sim did have new foil(wiring) pattern indicating new type of sim chip! Think these phones are fine, just too advanced for older sims, older telco network protocol. If still fails then get phone replaced and see.. I think that only few need this as there is low fail rates of hardware. But they sell millions so larger sample will show larger fail number not rate. For battery issues get mophie batt/case it runs all day and phone still at 100 percent by 3am! Oh exercise battery by drain and charge every two weeks. Camera is good, don't zoom in get closer! Video is good did roxette live last night well. Recording that wiped mophie batt tho, still by 3:39 had 87% left. Like hd vid on it, sound rec good. Siri is still basic but will evolve. Like dictation util it's nice, make sure environment is quiet... Computers still cannot focus on one voice it hears all.. Confusion happens then. Lovin it now... Let's see if it fails now. Have not tried restore backup yet but have no need. Backup now new set up for future restore cause this setup works.
