Powermac G4 USB 2.0 Card Support

Hello all,

I am upgrading my Powermac, and have a question on the support for pci usb 2.0 cards. Now, any card that says the words "mac compatable" is probably going to be a couple bucks over, and I am looking for something cheap. Here is what I plan on buying:

Btw, I plan on running tiger, and possibly leopard after a ram upgrade.

Would anybody here see any problems with this card in a Powermac G4 400mhz Sawtooth?

Thanks!

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.4.11), Tiger Server

Thanks for the reply! I think (over time) that I will go with a 1.6, 1, or 1.2ghz Sonnet processor upgrade (for a 100$ or less), and then bump up the ram to 2gb (My latest upgrade, which will be arriving soon, will include 1GB), and a sata controller for extra internal storage. So, by then it will even more out of date, but it is fun to upgrade the ppc macs because they run differently than the intels, which I think is pretty cool. I forgot to mention, but I do own an intel iMac, the PPC was just a starter Mac a few years back, and I haven't really gotten a chance to upgrade it because the video card fried 😟. Who knows, maybe by then a quicksilver or mdd will be in my hands, but I am mostly thinking of adding onto what I have because I would basically be spending the same amount of money either way I go. Also, I placed some leftover ram from recent projects into the G4, and it showed up fine (640mb total), and then it started having kernel panics. So, I removed the ram, and then it wouldn't boot. I repaired permissions, and the error turned out to be "Invalid Volume Header". Odd, but now it is working, and I should receive the 2.0 card to tomorrow. Thanks for your help, and sorry for the extended questions in this forum. LAST QUESTION! If I buy a 450mhz dual G4 processor for about 20$, would leopard run ok on it? My total specs by then would be 1.2gb ram, 40gb 7200 6GB 7200(Storage), 64mb Radeon Pro 9000. Thanks again for the help guys, the Apple discussions have never let me down.

Better than a 400, but just a bit.

Tiger is sweet on a slower dual processor like the 450. I have a couple of Gigabit Ethernet machines (DP 450 and DP 500) and have tried both with Leopard.

As long as a Radeon 9800 Pro was also installed, Leopard was tolerable, but without Core Image support, the processors are sapped and use isn't very pleasurable.

Again, Tiger flies on the DP machines and is the OS version that performs the best.

If you get the DP board, be sure that the heatsink is included.

Fine??? Not likely so, you'll be limited on number of Instruments & such, this is the earliest versions requirments I could find...

And...

System requirements: Mac OS X 10.2.6 or later, 600 MHz G3 CPU (G4 or faster required for software instruments),

I do agree, it was sluggish, but I also have only 256mb ram. I am running Garage '08, and added some audio clips in (to resemble my voice because I don't have a mic for the powermac yet), and it ran ok, sluggish, but it ran. I

am updating to the latest version of Garageband as we speek, and the cpu speed is of 22% because I am using VNC to display the desktop to my iMac. So, now I run into the same question I always do, Should I go for the 1ghz Processor?, and I think the answer is yes. I could either upgrade the machine I already have, or spend the money I would have to upgrade to buy an MDD. I have put 30$ into this thing in parts (which I will be receiving soon), so I will make my decission to see what the performance increase brings.

I can only say my 3 MDDs that have died were possibly my worst Mac investments of all time... I probably put $5K+ into upgrading them on top of the 10K original costs, I think I'd look for a G5 on eBay, the prices have dropped considerably, the 2.3 GHz is considered the most reliable one. 🙂

Of course I had to go with the Quad!...

Errrr, I don't have the money to shell out to buy/upgrade a G5 right now, and really want to use the machine I already have. The only other Mac (which is extremely limited to expandability) I could use would be my 700mhz G4 iMac. Hopefully after a Ram Upgrade, and some USB 2.0 ports, the G4 will act like a 2011 mac (not), but at least it will be somewhat upgraded. A USB Mic made by Blue, and Garageband may hold me off another year with the old Powermac, hopefully. Btw, Hope you had a good Thanksgiving if you are in the US.
