Another thing to check is to see if you have any items waiting to download in iTunes (on your iPhone).

The most recent time I had this problem, I checked there and found 5 items that hadn't downloaded properly. Once cleared, things started updating again.

It looks like there's a system-wide download queue, and, unlike the non-iPhone versions, it will only download one item at a time. So, if one item gets stuck, the others wait patiently behind it until its their turn, like polite people on an escalator. Pausing or deleting the troublesome download will allow the others to continue.

Same problem, looks like this cloud cluster has done the problem. I can only download now from sync iPad with iTunes on computer. It shows that the app is in the cloud. I turned of iCloud on iPad and in iTunes Store in my account, disconnected iPad and shut it down reconnected and tried a new app and cannot download or update any apps over the WIFI network, only get Waiting... message. Seems like after updating to IOS 5.1 is when the fan hit the cloud. What is puzzling when I go to iTunes store Purchased items, I have apps that are still in the cloud. So this cloudy mess is my problem? How do I get rid of the issue, do I need to restore my iPad, by deleting all my stuff and starting over?

I went down to the Apple Store in Charleston and was told I had to have an appointment. I got one, came back and discussed this "waiting" issue wither and the tech explained that it is preferable to download apps and updates using wifi and stay away from using networks such as AT&T or Verizon because they are packed with users. She turned on wifi, disabled the data usage in Settings and, presto all my waiting downloads loaded in an instant. The key was to disable the data usage and then turn on wifi. You can turn data usage back on later if you are going to use your device on the go but if you are going to download or update apps, find a location with wifi and follow the steps I described above. It works guys!

I ended up just leaving my iPhone alone. Over the course of a few hours they finally downloaded. I did this via wifi at my home. The problem that arose afterward is equally frustrating. iTunes is continually asking me for my password. Take into consideration that there is absolutely nothing in my download queue. iTunes support staff (via email) wrote that the fix is to reset my password. I did this by going to support.apple.com/kb/HE36

I'll reply later to let everyone on here know if this fixed my problem. Will do so by end of day today. FYI.

Had the same problem and fixed it after having some weird dream about being Clevelend Brown.

It turned out some podcasts I had downloaded from my iPhone didn't download, they were just sitting there. Don't know if they were just bad downloads or what but under iTunes/more/downloads there they were still waiting to download. After I deleted them everything worked fine.

Hopefully everyone's is so easy.
