Can't Sync Playlists Since Turning on iTunes Match

Since I've purchased iTunes Match, I thought it would also be great to turn the service on my iPod Touch, which I use to work out with. Upon turning on the service, I knew all of my media would be deleted and redownloaded, which I was okay with. I knew this would also include my playlists.

However, since everything has been put back into place, I haven't been able to sync, wirelessly, my playlists to my iPod Touch. There isn't the option to wirelessly sync playlists, or even to sync playlists across devices... or at least this seems like it to me.

Am I missing something, or is this a "bug"/"feature"/something forgotten by Apple?

Michael & Djchad, Thanks so much for explaining this better. As of now I am just going to leave match enabled on my phone & have it update automatically. like I was saying in my earlier posts my play lists would always be deleted with itunes match turned on but that was because at the time I did not know you then had to wait for the spinning wheel on the phone tp do it's thing and complete & then the playlists reappear. Thanks again

Lack of syncing (usb or wifi) is a big deal because it uses a huge amount of data from the internet and can take hours instead of minutes. I also hate that I can no longer have smart playlists that update automatically on a sync - the ability to have all playlists updated with the latest files is gone, now it's messing with a bunch of different playlists manually.

For God's sake Apple! Let me choose "sync music from this playlist" when syncing the iPhone in iTunes like in the good old times even having iCloud/iTunes Match enabled.

"iPhone can access music in iCloud. Songs can be downloaded and played via Wi-Fi"

I DON'T WANT THAT! I don't want to choose the music on the iPhone and download it from there! I want to be able to choose it in iTunes and tell it to sync to my iPhone! Why the heck are you forcing me to download the music from a server on the device? Makes no sense Apple! C'mon! You're driving me crazy guys!

back. I don't want the music to download from iCloud I want it to transfer from my computer to my iPhone :'-( what's the matter with downloading something I already have from a server? Makes no sense. Makes sense when I'm not home but doesn't make sense when I'm home. Why don't you let people choose? Transferring the music from the computer would be MUCH faster too.

Sad to see Apple losing its own spirit: making things easy and straightforward. Simply working.

Same thing appears to happen with playlists that include iTunes U stuff.

Some of my playists ported over, although I can't seem to control which ones eventually make it onto my phone. I'll have to play with it more but it seems poorly implemented at this stage. I think MusicMatch and ios6 need some work helping people manage playlists. This seems especially true if you include items that are not "cloud compatible" like podcasts and iTunes U tracks.

Many iTunes U and podcasts are messed up and out of order, and I like to make playlists to listen to them on the go. This doesn't work anymore with MusicMatch enabled.

Usually I would make a regular playlist and synch everything I wanted in regular playlists. Now, altough iTunes says the iTunes U playlist will be synched (since it won't sych others) I still can't find it anywhere. It's not in iTunes U, and not in iTunes on the phone.

If I have a playlist that has iTunes U items, have Music Match turned on, and have it checked to synch a playlist under the iTunes U tab, do you know where the heck it shows up on the device? I don't see it in iTunes playlists, no anywhere in iTunes U anymore.

Does this mean if you use MusicMatch, you can no longer listen to tracks that aren't "cloud approved" on your device anymore? Some tracks and things like podcasts won't upload for licensing reasons I'm guessing, which is OK, but not if they are just not available at all on my phone period.

Thank you!

I should have updated this MONTHS ago, apologies for letting this linger. However I found the solution to this problem, was merely waiting for Apple to update iTunes Match (I think). Let me describe is fully:

The problem I was describing, was my inability to grab playlists from iTunes Match, after they've been synced, especially after having a device that did not previously have iTunes Match associated with it. The solution was to delete all of the music on that device, and then turn on iTunes Match. Then, all of your playlists will appear from iCloud and you can download specific playlists as you wish.

This, I've found, has been the only true resolution to this problem because when you assign a device to have it's music matched by iTunes Match, you cannot add music to your device. Which makes "sense" if all of your music is in iTunes Match.

So, when you don't see any of your playlists, either wipe all of the music from your iDevice (backup first however), and then turn in iTunes Match.

I think regular playlists eventually show up. I do wish there was more options to manually control the playlist synchs when desired but am ok waiting for regular playlists to propagate.

My main problem is different I guess.

Playlists of Podcasts, iTunes U and ones with the cloud strikeout symbol (has tracks that the cloud won't upload due to licensing) never seem to show up on the phone no matter what.

Do you have any solution to manually synch items that are not "music match cloud approved" to the phone once music match is enabled?

Thank you.

Additionally, Podcasts that you subscribe to in iTunes on an Mac OS/Windows computer and an authorized Apple ID will show up if you download the Podcasts app from the AppStore. It is an Apple provided free app.

So consider this scenario:

  1. I subscribe to many podcasts on my iMac in iTunes. I have EVERY podcasts downloaded and present on my iMac.
  2. On my iPhone 5, I choose to sync the last 5 for each Podcast, and my iPad 3 the most recent single podcast. Even though both are the 64GB capacity models, I have MANY hour long dance podcasts from my favorite DJs.
  3. The Podcasts are playable via the Podcasts app on both iOS based devices. For each podcasts, I can see not only the podcasts that I have sync'd locally from iMac to iOS device, but I also have the option to go see the other podcasts that are available... perhaps even one that is brand new and dont want to wait until I get home to listen to it. So I download it.

None of that comes from the iTunes Match service, it is part of iTunes in the cloud. Which is better because not only do these files NOT count toward the 25k limit, but they are also available independant of my iTunes library. Therefore I can even choose to NOT sync Podcasts via iTunes, but just manage each podcast I have locally on my iPhone from anywhere, at anytime. 🙂

I have the podcasts. It's the playlists not synching nor being manually synch-able.

This is an issue for whatever has the "not iCloud compatible" cloud strikethrough symbol.

I am looking to find playlists in the Podcast or iTunes U apps, or be able to manually synch playlists again for these.

Dies this fix that? If so sorry.

Thanks

I understand. But the point here is you can manage them separately in "the cloud" rather than iTunes with a local computer connection (ie USB or WiFi). Therefore, if you are using a smart playlist in iTunes on your computer, simply add a Media Kind is Music as part of the criteria and that playlist shoud then be iTunes Match friendly. If it is a manual playlist, just remove the content that isnt compatible. Then manage your PodCast and iTunes U content in the cloud via the respective applications on your iOS devices. You no longer are dependant on your computer as "step 1" of that process. Step 1 can be done anywhere now.

It is just a different way of thinking. Basically, think of iTunes on your computer as a fully integrated total solution for Movies, TV, Music, Books, Apps, Podcasts, Store, and iTunes U. On your iOS device, they are decoupled and managed separately. Its tough to let go of the old way because it was so simple and powerful. But once you do, you will probably like it much better because you will spend less time on your computer and more time on you iOS device (which is the point of "the cloud"... less dependancy on step 1 starting always at your computer.)

I hope that helps... and I do hope I am not talking past your problem. But I think what most people struggle with when it comes to iTunes Match is the point of that service vs. all the other "included" iCloud services offerred by Apple. 🙂

I dont think we're understanding each other.

I the phone, or in iTunes U or iPod apps, how do you synch your playlists. That's not a different way of doing it I think, but sacrificing functionality to synch non cloud stuff when before you could do both. I could download from the phone and synch playlists before music match.

It still synchs playlists for "cloud compatible" stuff eventually.

I have podcasts and iTunes U playlists that won't synch anymore with music match enabled.
