I notice when I plug my iphone into itunes, I have the phone number "+1 (123) 456-7890" what does the plus sign mean? I notice several contacts also had it after updating to iOS 501

+1 is the country code, or more precisely the World Zone, for the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), which includes the USA, Canada, Bermuda and the Caribbean. +44 is the country code for the UK, for example. in the US you would dial it as 011-44-xxxxx, but in France you would dial it as 00-44-xxxxx. Using "+" means you don't have to know those details (011 vs 00).
So, when I plug my iphone into itunes, the phone shows up as "+1-123-456-7890" but that's the area code, not the world code. I can't remember it the plus sign showed up before or after the ios 5.0 update...
"+" is a universal code that means the following digit or digits are a Country Code (or more correctly a World Zone digit followed optionally by a country code). The advantage of using it is you don't need to know the specific sequence of digits to call outside of the country you are currently in.
