iMovie Export Issue "File already open with with write permission"

I'm using OS10.6.8 on a MacBookPro and I, too, am getting the "sudo: tmutil: command not found" message after entering my password.

What might be the fix for this, please?

I would recommend not using Unix commands unless you really know what you are doing.

You can accomplish the same thing by opening System Preferences. There you will find Time Machine preferences on the 4th row. Set Time Machine to OFF and create your movie.

Don't forget to come back here and turn Time Machine back on when you are finished.

This is not working for me. I keep getting the same error when trying to export my movie:

Unable to export movie.

The movie could not be exported because an error occurred. (-50)

Thank you SO much @elikness!!! i've spent this whole week uploading and re-uploading and re-uploading, not knowing what was going wrong. I've wasted sooo much time waiting for it to upload because I thought my using the computer while it was trying to upload was why it was failing. This fixed it in ONE TRY! you are awesome!! 😀

What I can not figure out is why this is still a problem after more than a year and it has not been fixed?

Thanks very much to everyone who helped on this iMovie export issue and turning off Time Machine snapshots. That totally worked for me as well. Given that many Apple users use Time Machine for backups, I"m suprised that Apple has not integrated this into an automatic update.

I've ejected my backup disk, turned time machine off, and done the sudo tmutil enable local in my terminal. iMovie still won't export to media browser. Any more suggestions?

Got it! For anyone who has the same problem I did: Go into time machine preferences and click on "options…". Deselect "Lock documents after…". Save your changes. Then Turn Time Machine off and lock your settings. Then I shut down my computer. At Log-on I did the sudo tmutil disable local thing described in earlier posts. Quit all programs and opened iMovie. This time it exported like it should.
