Totalling the number of check marks in my check list

From the screenshots and your comments, sounds like A2:A43 is entered as text. The way to add cell references on the iPad is to simply tap on the cell, or drag on a bunch of cells, or tap on the gray bars around the table.

To replace the text and replace it with a real cell reference, do this:

- Double tap on "A2:A43" bubble to select it and either hit the delete key or hit Cut.

- Now, with the cursor still in the formula, look above the table, and tap on the A in the gray bar above the column A.

I just realized that maybe your formula cell is not in a footer row. So following the above will return an error. You can either make that last row a footer row or instead of tapping on the A, just drag along column A cells to enter a reference for the specific cells you want, e.g. put your finger on cell A2 and drag down to A43.

In the long run, it would probably be better to use the footer row. With the table or a cell selected, tap on the "i" button on the top right and then tap on Headers. You should see a setting for Footer Rows. Just add 1 and it will make that last row in your table with the formula a footer row.
