How to Install Siri on iphone 4

Daniel - one point you aren't considering is that Siri had been availble on the iPhone 3 and 4 for more than a year as a standalone app, so those of us that had been using Siri for a year or so suddently lost that ability when the 4S came out. If Apple had simply limited the "integrated" version of Siri to the 4S, that's within the bounds of acceptable marketing strategy, but taking away the existing functionality of the standalone Siri app and significantly downgrades the existing users is unfair and inescusable.

The fact that Apple didn't give us existing Siri users an alert that it was being disabled, and instead simply took down the server the Siri app connected to, means Apple didn't even have the guts or courtesy to tell existing users that they were being disabled.

However apple did gie warning of server shut down. However they did not indicte how they would come back up...

Siri said when you opened the app:

"Hello! I'm afraid I'll be shutting down October 15th to make way for a better version of me. Until then how can I help??"

What I'm angry at is we were never told that we would get Siri back, or that it would be exclusive to 4s. Apple have truly let me down.

The Siri you were using is not the same as the 4S siri. This is built into the OS and does all kinds of stuff the app didn't. It is now a feature of the 4S and that's that. No amount of complaining will change that. As for the loyal customers thing: The newest product will always have a feature the old one didn't have. Apple isn't dissing iPhone 4 owners by not giving them Siri. This is the way business is done. When you bought the iPhone 4 you got a nice Retina display and Facetime that the 3Gs users didn't get. What's the difference? Because Siri is software? So what?

Karen - That is the same message I saw, but my interpretation of that message at the time was that a new, better version of Siri would replace it. It's hard to interpret it any other way based on the wording in their message message. My imagination simply isn't creative enough to have been able to picture from that message a situation where Apple would, not only not give us the new improved version, but that they would actually break the existing version. After the fact, they could have created a simple server for the older Siri to connect to that gave a message that it was no longer available for the iPhone 4 rather than just letting the app continue to report a server connection error.

Yes loc0rsaire, because it's software and it is very easy for them to continue to continue supporting the old version. But in general, you should never break existing functionality when you release an upgrade, especially not intentinoally with the sole purpose of forcing users to buy the new phone -- you won't get the new features in the new version, but you shouldn't lose the old features.

Let's give a hypothetical example to make the point. Let's say that for years you used the built-in camera for both still photos and videos on your iphone 4. Then, when apple came out with the 4S, they just decided to break the video feature on the iphone 4 camera. They didn't need to do break the video, they just chose to on purpose so that you would have to buy the new 4S. This is basically what they did, but in this case the actual feature they stole from existing users was the Siri software rather than my hypothetical video example.

Here's the thing though. Apple bought Siri from it's owners. Apple didn't turn it off, the previous owner did because, well, it's not theirs anymore. So think of it as, the creators of the app are no longer supporting it and Apple made a new "app" with the same name. Also as stated above, who would buy the 4s if you had Siri? Limited functionality? People wouldn't be happy even with that. Everyone would want the feature that makes Siri what it is. Nobody would want it if it was only so you could "Call Jennifer". You guys want the "Find this/that" "Remind me ..." etc. So, I would say, if anything, be mad at the Siri creators for "selling out".

1. Siri is 'exclusive' to 4S and above. This was the same as the 3GS when Voice Control was 'exclusive' to 3GS and i4.
2. Apple will not add it to the 4 and below nor condone to hacking it onto the older models. It's 4S and above only.
3. It's also not on the iPad series either for odd reasons.

Their reason is mainly due to the performance issues it would have. Just as AirPlay to iTV video streaming won't work with iPhone 4 and 3GS.

As far as I can remember I have been an apple product fan, their products have been at the cutting edge of computer techonology as far as I can remember. To me it was always a privilege to say I own an apple product simply because I always thought it gave me a consumer edge that I thought I did not have with a regular pc when it came to computing. However the special relationship that I thought I had with apple has changed over the years and now it's a bitter sweet one.

The reason is largely due to the fact that I have quite a few scars on my back because of apple's planned obsoletion policies that leave customers in the dust with products that are not more than a year or two old by simply constantly upgrading an operating system and adding one or two sometimes useful and somtimes not so useful hardware features to the new hardwared and so forcing you to buy their newer products... my first g4,g5 towers still run solid but they are obsolete because apple wants them to be... now my iPhone 4 that I purchased not even a year ago is starting to go obsolete...eventually loyal customers catch this abusive pattern and they begin to question the integrity of a company and how it treats it's loyal customers...

As it stands today the thrill is gone, and the only reason I use apple is because I still feel it gives me an edge over other products, and a lot of my software only runs on apple products, but the thrill has been gone for some time now. I have been looking for other alternatives, so far I have not found one, but the fact that I am looking should tell Apple something, and by the looks of this forum I realize I am not alone... I honestly wish there was a better product out there, the moment the opportunity arises I will gladly start investing in alternative technology so that I don't have all and if possible any of my eggs, in the Apple Greedy Monopoly Customer Abuse Basket... TB

half of you dont know what your even talking about, the current version of siri is a beta and once they finish the tweeks and the iphone 4s sales slow down they will put the full siri on the app store most likely mid 2012

We don't know because Apple hasn't told us anything. Here is what I know. A friend of mine had been talking me into switching to apple for a long time. Finally, when he showed me a brief demo of Siri it convinced me to buy an iphone, so I bought and Apple 3GS and Siri was the first app I loaded. Then I bought an Apple 4 when it came out, Siri was still on it of course. Then the iphone 4S came out and, without warning the took the Siri app away. There was no warning from Apple (unless you count the cryptic message that sounded like an upgrade was coming), there was no apology, and there has been no indication that it would come back ever. I had been using Siri for more than a year and that was a factor in me buying the iphone in the first place, so to have it taken away is disturbing. I have already bought 2 iphones (3GS and 4) in less than 18 months, but apparently that's not enough. I have bigger things to concern myself with than Siri, but there is no question that apple has behaved badly in taking away existing functionality at least for those of us that had been actively using it.
