sync won't start

iPad and iPhone are updated to 5.x, iTunes is updated to latest version. Now neither of the devices will sync. iTunes freezes on "waiting for sync to start" then times out with the error message that syncing did not happen because sync never started.???

There never seems just one solution to a problem. Im my case, I simply changed the USB/iPhone cable and sync worked fine. Maybe because I initially used a iPad USB cable (which I really don't think was the issue) and maybe the iPad cable was defective (greater possibility). USB iPhone cables have a tendency to break more ofthen than they shoud.

Hope it works for you

Realise it's an old thread but it's the first one that came up on my search for a solution.

Tried all the suggestions but finally found a different issue : I was running two userids on the mac and itunes running on a different userid was locked up trying to tell me that it couldn't sync with this iphone (naturally because it was sync'd with this userid).

Once I shutdown the other itunes this userid was happy to sync.
