Resizing photos to 300ppi-how can I do it?

I have submitted photos for a book chapter to the editor, who e-mailed me, saying,"All the photos you sent me are too low resolution to use in a book. They are all 72 dpi, 640 x 480 pixels per inch (ppi). The publisher prints at 300 ppi." I don't know how to do this- do I search iPhoto, Preview, or what?

first off see See www.rideau-info.com/photos/mythdpi.html - The Myth of DPI for additional information.

So to print a 300 DPI photo you need to know the pirnt size and multiply them by 300 - so a 4"x6" photo would need to be 1200x1800 pixels to print at 300 DPI

for a 640x480 photo to print at 300 DPI it would have to be a 2.133"x1.6" print

Well, how do I send the .jpgs to her via e-mail so that she has her 300ppi print, without knowing the end size of the print, which she did not give me? Is there a place on Mail to adjust for attachments? Can I do something in Preview? I've asked for clarification, and frankly am not going to be able to re-take the pictures. This is the entire e-mail:

"All the photos you sent me are too low resolution to use in a book. They are all 72 dpi, 640 x 480 pixels per inch (ppi). The publisher prints at 300 ppi. So, a 300 x 300 ppi image will print at 1 inch by 1 inch. Your photos would print at about 2 inches by 1.5 inches, which is too small. Something that you might use on a web site or to send to a friend will typically be too low resolution for printing. Digital cameras all have settings on them that let you choose the resolution of the photo--go for the highest possible resolution. Also, some e-mail programs automatically reduce the resolution of a photo when you send it by e-mail, so the originals may be higher resolution. It's worth checking."

All of which may be true, but doesn't tell me how to actually do the thing. How do I check e-mail photo settings?

You can not

PPI (or DPI) is pixels (or Dots) divided by inches - if you do not know the inches you can mot know the PPI - It is like asking what is the actual miles per gallon you got on your last trip without knowing how many miles you drove - it is impossible

Exactly how are you e-mailing the photos? Also Look in the info pane in iPhoto and report the pixel size of the photo.
