Wait. You got it in October? But the factory unlocked iphone 4s were only available from the 14th of November. How much did you pay for it? Factory unlocked costss 649$ before taxes. You probably got it on a contract basis with a fixed carrier. So may be you should get in touch with the Carrier and find out what options you have. You should be able to pay them the remaining due and get in unlocked via carrier itself.

you can do it unofficially (not now, may be after couple of weeks)...don't panic or sell your phone....if you try to sell without knowing much about iphone, people may try to cheat you by telling it is locked and offer you some dirt cheap price...may be you need to wait for couple of weeks...search on google..but ensure not to get into to any spam sites...

I cannot put any more info about that in this forum...

And if you really want to sell try to get a descent price (you may get the same price you bought the phone, don't disclose that to anyone, in India iphone 4s is still very hot...and has a good market..)

Oh if you spent 35k then it has to be unlocked, you dont have to contact any carriers in US or wherever you got the phone from. Which Sim card are you using? Call up your cusotmer care or take your phone to whichever service provider you use. My friend got an Airtel Sim, He went to their Store and got it done. Works for him now.

Some people put in new sim cards you should try the same. Let me know if this works. Cheers

Hey Rocky,

I just called up apple customer care in USA. After talking to an automated machine for a while i was connected to an apple executive who was very helpful and she prioritized my shipping to something called "guaranteed next business day". Costs about 16 Dollars more. So now the website says Delivery between December 2nd to December 9th. It earlier said Between 7th and 14th. Anyway i hope i get it on time i.e before my relatives leave. Then i will unpack it and may be take a video and put it on youtube 😝

@harry,

It is interesting to see that still most of the people, whoever is interested on iPhone (in India) have a vague idea on iPhone, its price, contract etc. I have been hearing from my friends and family that..”ohyou are in Canada,so iPhone would be cheap there...” Not to blame, but just to let you know myexperience on this

First about unlock: there is no way att will unlock yourphone for you. We cannot even think about that (official unlock) from India. The veryvery minimal chance is that, you are an att customer and had been in theircontract for 1 to 2 yrs and you said them that you are going back to India socan you pls unlock it for me,

there is a very minimal chance they will do it for you (butvery very less chance that they will do...I haven't heared that they did it forsomeone.)

So, you need to unlock unofficially. Currently hackers couldnot get into a 4s unlock and 4 unlock is available only for a specific modemfirmware. But we are expecting 4s unlock very soon (as per hackingteam)..that's why I asked you to wait. Email me (get my email address from myprofile) I can help you with that...or I told you google it..(be warned, don’tgive your iPhone to any petty mobile shop guy(s), they may screw it up. Unlock usuallycan be done yourself once it is available)

@siddarth You cannot buy a contract phone ($199 one) in USfrom India. It requires you to provide lot of your personal information like SSN no.,credit history, local address etc and importantly you need a US credit card. And some of your friend or family in US can get one by giving all thesedetails, but they need to pay a monthly fee around 45-50 $ th till the completion of contract (2 yrs). Ifthey break the contract they have to pay back almost same price of an unlockedphone around $400 + to the company and will get a locked phone. So why thishassle, get a fully unlocked one ($600 +). By seeing $199 price people willthink it is cheaper in US or Canada, but this is the fact, if you break, pay almost full amount back to the company. If you don't do that, they can sue you legally.

If you order online at apple.com for an unlocked iPhone fromIndia, they may ship it by guaranteed next day and all, but you will face problem atIndian customs. You have to pay an hefty customs duty and vat at India (comesaround 14-15%) and then it will cost almost same or more than what currentlyAircel and Airtel charging you (Rs.44500) then why all these hassles, get onefrom Aircel/Airtel...it is unlocked one too (as per my understanding, but checkwith them.) and you will get warranty. However I see you did order online letme know what you faced from Indiacustoms; I am also interested for that.

Harry got it from his friend and he is from US. So if hepaid 35K also, doesn't mean it is fully unlocked, he can check with his friendonly.

Visit apple.com for the iPhone prices, instead of asking inthe forum.

I don't know much about numberingplans.com, I just googled for IMEI check and found it. I also tried 1 IMEI it shows some info except the carrier!!! we are not going to download anything from that site or nothing...anyway just to let you know.

and about iPhone prices...(it is purley my personal openion based on my few years experience on iphone and related field. But I have no idea about second-hand market of mobile phones and has no experience on selling/buying one)

"is locked phone is fine for 35k?

and how much price i can get if want to sell?"

there is no proper answer for your question, there is no fixed price, the prices are highly biased/impacted depend on negotiations and demands. Locked phone may be fine for 35k if it can be unlocked. yes, I would say, only if it can be unlocked. If you buy something, that is not usefull for its purpose then it is a waste only.

Buyer point of view:

If I would be in your place, I would not have bought this phone as, at that point of time (when you bought this phone) there were no unlcok available (and I had no idea if it would be available in future) If someone force me to buy, I may offer him 15-20K. I am taking a risk here as if the unlock is not available at all, I could use this as iPod only!!! hence this less price.

Now I am expecting an unlock (99%) soon, so at this point of time, I would offer 25K but max < 30K for a locked one.

Seller point of view:

I would suggest you wait for couple of weeks till the unlock available. Then unlcok your phone and sell by telling that it is unlocked and can be used with any carrier (ebay is a good place, you can even put it on a bid/auction).

And if you want to sell now only, tell the buyer that, it is brand new, locked one and the unlock is available soon (tell him frankly that, however you are not so sure about unlcok availablity etc. we don't want to cheat anybody, do you?). I guess you missed to ask this question - whether it is unlocked - while you bought the phone. Here you can ask for the same price that is 35K. You may need to negotiate the price (to 5-7k lesser...just I think)

And a final suggestion, search on ebay.in for iphone 4s and find iphones similar like yours - that is: locked/unlockable and brand new. Check the price and compare and understand the market. That will really help you.

Between my dear frined, you have got an awesome phone, make decision wisely and wait for sometime.

I wish you all the best.
