iphone 4s unlocked working in india

just to add to this, on ebay.in I found, for the iphone 4s, locked to ATT (sealed pack) it is 40k. but he mntioned it is "easliy unlockable using an ATT sim" which is wrong!!! and misleading. See how people are fooling others...so to raise to 40K he need to tell the lie

if your carrier is Verizon/Sprint still you have a chance...

you may check your carrier by going to Settings -> General -> About -> Carrier which will tell you who is your carrier. (only if your phone is activated for first time)

The Apple store online (US) is selling the unlocked, contract-free iphone 4s 16 gb for 650 $ + tax, which works out to roughly 35k. So if one orders that from the states, it should work fine and not have any of those network or sim problems right ?

I was planning to get an iPhone 4s unlocked from canada through my friend and use it with vodafone, here in hyderabad. Reading the posts here, I am rethinking on it. Can anyone confirm whether the unlocked ones works fine in india with all the carriers after the launch, nov 25? Or still anyone out there with unlocked phones having issues?

yes, ATT is now officially unlocking the iphones which is locked into them for * free *. If you have got the iphone through proper channel and had paid all the contract cancellation fee you will be mostly eligible for this unlock. You need to chat or phone ATT customer support and provide your IMEI no. and ATT account no and then the ATT customer support can tell you if you are eligible for unlock. If you are eligible, in one week or so it will be unlocked officially. You may get an email from ATT/Apple by providing steps to unlock (it would be nothing but connect with iTunes, after you have got thie email, then you can see your phone is unlocked)

Once it is officially unlocked, you need not worry at all like upgrading iOS etc. This is a permanent unlock.

If in case you are not eligible for this unlock, you can still unlock * unofficially *. Go to eBay, search for "R SIM III", sort by "price + shipping lowest first", and buy the interposer SIM from a reputed seller. Then use that SIM to unlock your iphone and enjoy it with other carriers.

(the latest version of this SIM is now III (3), buy that, it will even work with 5.1 iOS.

NO, it is not true. You will need to purchase an unlocked iPhone. The $199 price is for a subsidized, locked iPhone.

I don't need to check the video. Gevey is illegal. Another question,if you purchase the phone for $199, how do you propose to save money if you are paying AT&T a large monthly fee. Save yourself the grief and aggravation and purchase an unlocked iPhone.

Latest versions of Gevey or R SIM is not illegal (neither unofficial unlock). Latest version doesn't involve any 112/911 emergency number dial (illegal part) in the process.

Another thing I can confirm that: My friend who was with ATT for 6 months, now in off contract, got his phone unlocked officially today. (He had raised the request 1 week back). Also note that he had paid complete cancellation fee (I guess $300) , that mean this official unlock will only work for whom who bought the ATT iPhone throiugh proper channel.

you can buy an ATT contract phone ($199 one) only if you have a valid US SSN, Credit card and/or credit history. If you are just visitng the US, you are not going to get this contract phone. You have to buy an unlocked one for full price. Your friend or relatives, who is already in US may be able to buy one for you with their credentials, but then they are responsible for the monthly payments and cancellation fee etc.

Hence as I discussed earlier in this thread, getting $199 iphone with no strings attached is not possible.

I am currently in US and would be going back to India after a month or so.

I am planning to buy an unlocked iphone 4s, so that i can use here as well as in India. Checked out at apple site and ebay site too. There was one unlocked with gevey sim in the ebay with good price from one of the top sellers.

Would there be any difference in the features as such if i buy from ebay rather than getting it from apple?

Please guide me.

The Gevey SIM is illegal in every country on the planet. There is no telling what you're going to get if you buy from ebay. They are not an authorized iPhone distributor. Stick to a trusted source.

Better yet, just buy one in India. ALL iPhones sold by legitimate sources in India are unlocked. And there will be the added bonus of actually being able to get it serviced in India.

I would always recommend to buy from apple store, the officially unlocked one. So you don't need to worry about future firmware upgrade and all.

The gevey SIM unlcok is un-official (I don't want to call this illegal though, you can search on internet and decide yourself. As far as my understanding, un-official unlock is legal and latest gevey doesnot involve any 112 dialing - the illegal part, but I am not a law consultant or so, so you cannot take any of my word as a confirmation for this. Atleast in India I don't think it is a problem). The problen with unofficial unlock is that whenever you do a firware upgrade in your iphone (like iOS 5.1 to 5.1.1 etc.) you may lose the unlock and either you will lose it forever or you may need to wait and buy the latest version of Gevey SIM to unlcok again - if it is available at all.

Sometime you may also get battery drain issue etc.

Officially unlocked phone is always good * if you have money *...

cheaper one you may get from eBay, but you get what you paid for. Between you may be able to find officially unlocked phones also on eBay.

The ONLY way to unlock it is to contact the original carrier and ask about unlocking. ONLY they have power to unlock it, if they allow it (some do not unlock under any circumstances).
